Modern cars with power-assisted everything have just made us lazy. A Minor certainly doesn't need servo-assisted brakes, just a firm push on the pedal that no-one gave any thought to back in the day.

I disconnected and blocked off the vacuum pipe to the servo, and the (static, not driven yet) signs are that the brakes are now working correctly - with the engine running, and not running. So as suspected there must be something up with the servo. I'll leave it in place for now as it's plumbed into the hydraulic line, but long term I'll remove it and free up some space under the bonnet.

The rest of the afternoon was spent slopping a mixture of Waxoyl/EP90/greasy gloop mix over the underside to hopefully preserve the metalwork. The structure underneath is quite a complicated affair, I doth my cap to anyone who replaces it all in the course of a restoration.

Dynamo removed today to investigate a lack of charging, plus the bottom adjustment bracket was seized up (a little heat with it in a vice soon cured that). The fan belt is a horrid modern toothed affair, so that'll be replaced while it's off.

The engine was also run up to temperature, I think a new pressure cap is needed (now ordered), but it seems to run ok, the rad is uniformly warm too so hopefully that'll be ok to use.

Both semaphore indicators were restored to health this evening. The n/s one wasn't bad, it just needed freeing off a bit. The o/s semaphore needed the plastic lens replacing (the original had melted outwards, causing it to foul the bodywork), plus a new bulb and again a spot of freeing off.

Does anyone know the rating for the two main fuses? at the moment the holders are bridged by wire.....the manual doesn't appear to give the ratings.

The oil in the back axle and gearbox were checked today, both were a bit on the low side.

For some reason I find looking at a freshly-gloopy (ie greased/Waxoyled) underside quite satisfying Smile

The MM is now "taxed" and insured (a whopping £24 extra on my existing policy that runs until May 2017).

I thought I'd have a look at the address of its first owner in Basingstoke - Mr Bone bought the Moggy in 1952. The house, if it's the original, has been much modified over the years. In theory he lived in the RH side of the building shown below. Does this look like a house that would have been standing at that time, modifications apart?

In 1969 the Moggy and Mr Bone moved to Camberley, in Surrey.

Almost three years later to the day, in 1972, Mr Arthur William Frank Bone upped sticks and moved to Rustington in Sussex, taking the Moggy with him.

That's the final entry in the old buff logbook, if I think on I'll send off to DVLA for copies of any other logbooks they may have on file.

Hi
I would say that the basingstoke house is late '20s to mid '30s.
Try www.oldmaps.co.uk
As it is an existing road you can enter the road name in the search box and there is a 1932 1:2500 scale, you have to zoom in a bit if the modern map stays on screen.
There is a limit to how near you can zoom in but ctrl+ will get round that.

ctrl0 to go back to normal

Evening all,

Two successful sorties were undertaken this evening, covering a total of 7 miles to give everything a bit of a shake-down. The basics appear to be in order, and with the tickover wound back slightly it appears to run well.

There are odd little things to attend to, but no great shakes so far, so I'm quite pleased with how it went really.
