Hi all,

News regarding the 2016 Classic as it arrives here:

--------------------------

SILVERSTONE CLASSIC TICKETS ON SALE FOR 2016

• Weekend ticket prices frozen at 2015 levels
• New Family Ticket provides extra savings
• Discounted Early Bird tickets make great Christmas gifts

Tickets for the 2016 Silverstone Classic go on general sale today (Thursday 12 November) with significant discounts for ‘Early Bird’ bookers.

After the huge success of this year’s record-breaking Silver Jubilee extravaganza – an event which attracted more than 100,000 visitors for the first time in the Classic’s 25-year history – the 2016 Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) is already gearing up for another massive attendance next summer, not least as many admission prices have been frozen and a great value new Family Ticket has been introduced.

With more and more festival-goers finding one day just isn’t enough at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, prices for three-day adult tickets – as well as camping and hospitality – are being held for 2016.

What’s more, for those planning ahead – or perhaps purchasing the perfect Christmas gift – discounts of up to 17 per cent are available on Early Bird tickets on sale until 31 March. These discounted Early Bird adult tickets cost £35 for Friday, £59 for Saturday and £49 for Sunday, while a three-day weekend ticket costs just £99.

Commenting on the 2016 event, Nick Wigley, CEO of Goose Live Events, the company responsible for Silverstone Classic, said: “We are delighted to offer three-day tickets in 2016 at the same great value as this year. The event is now a firm family favourite and it’s wonderful to see all generations enjoying our celebration of classic motor racing. In recognition of this, we’ve also introduced a special new family ticket for the whole weekend – including camping for two adults and two children (aged 6-16) – which is discounted by over 20 per cent on our advance tickets. We’re looking forward to another great event in July!”

As widely-praised tradition dictates, all Classic tickets provide ‘access all areas’ ensuring everyone gets up close to the unrivalled spectacle of priceless racing and glittering classic road cars from bygone halcyon eras. All tickets provide unlimited access to both buzzing race paddocks and covered grandstand seating for great spectating, further enhanced by race commentary and live action on the big screens. Interactive driving activities, access to all the car club displays, live music from top classic rock bands and lots of family entertainment in the infield including a free vintage funfair all guarantee an unforgettable weekend.

Tickets are available via the official website www.silverstoneclassic.com. Early Bird ticket sales close at midnight on 31 March, 2016 with advance tickets available from 1 April, 2016. As in recent years, all admittance will be by Early Bird or Advance ticket only – there will be no sales on-the-gate at Silverstone.

More about the Can-Ams cars set to feature in 2016 ...

---------

Days of Thunder!

• Can-Am celebration grows into a 2016 race series
• 50th anniversary celebration culminates at Silverstone Classic
• Three-venue challenge adds to the birthday excitement
• Early Bird tickets available, making the perfect Christmas gift

Silverstone Classic’s recently announced plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Can-Am Championship have blossomed into what is certain to be one of the most eagerly-anticipated highlights on the 2016 motor sport calendar.

The pair of very special commemoration races at next summer’s Classic (29-31 July) will be the amazing culmination of a not-to-be-missed, three-round Can-Am 50 Interserie Challenge being organised by Masters Historic Racing.

The addition of curtain-raisers at Brands Hatch and Donington Park will provide owners of these extraordinary Can-Am racers with a pair of extra incentives to dust off their monster machines and be part of what is going to be an astonishing celebration.

“There’s been an incredible buzz since we announced our intention to include Can-Am races in 2016,” reported Nick Wigley, CEO of Goose Live Events, the company responsible for the Silverstone Classic. “Now the addition of these two extra races will just fuel those fires and ensure the 50-year milestone is marked in memorable style with some truly fantastic races next summer. Rather like Group B in rallying, these fearsome Can-Am creations have rightly reached legendary status and to have so many of them back racing is really going to catch everyone’s imagination.”

“Can-Am cars always stop people in their tracks,” agreed Rachel Bailey, Masters Historic Racing event manager. “They look exciting, sound superb and we are very pleased to be organising this celebration series in tandem with the Silverstone Classic where the cars will take centre stage. We are sure that many cars from across Europe will seize the opportunity to take part in this series and it will be wonderful to see them return to the circuits again. We are keen to attract a wide range of cars into action and offer fans a snapshot of the history of Can-Am racing.”

To ensure massive grids, the must-see Can-Am 50 Interserie Challenge will include classes for 1960s and 1970s cars along with a category for the later, smaller-engined sports-prototypes that ran in the Masters Interserie Revival series a few seasons ago.

Launched in 1966, the legendary North American-based Can-Am Championship spawned some of the world’s most outrageous sports racers, often boasting well over 1,000 horsepower. Moreover, with very few technical restrictions, these amazing, cutting-edge Can-Am powerhouses were among the first race cars to sport wings, ground-effect aerodynamics and aerospace materials.

McLaren, Chaparral, Lola, BRM, March, Shadow and Porsche were among the notable constructors rising to the challenge, with their mighty machines driven by many of the era’s top aces – heroes such as Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Bruce McLaren, Peter Revson, George Follmer, Jacky Ickx, Jackie Oliver, Denny Hulme, Mark Donohue and Alan Jones.

The inclusion of these incredible sportscars will be a major attraction at the 2016 Silverstone Classic. Fans wanting to savour these machines can take advantage of Early Bird tickets now on sale for the Classic, offering significant savings of up to 17 per cent. There is also the all-new Family ticket available for 2016 – this includes camping for two adults and two children across the whole weekend and gives a discount of more than 20 per cent on advance tickets if bought individually.

On Parade at Silverstone Classic.

• New Year brings new automotive anniversaries
• The perfect backdrop for car clubs to celebrate milestones
• Lamborghini, Viper and Westfield track parades
• Car Club to celebrate 100 years of Bayerische Motoren Werke
• Early Bird tickets available until the end of March

With the arrival of 2016 comes another new year packed with exciting automotive anniversaries. And, as tradition now dictates, many of these key motoring milestones will be celebrated in stunning style with mouth-watering displays and eye-catching track parades at the annual Silverstone Classic (29-31 July).

In recent years, the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit has staged record processions featuring evocative E-type Jaguars, fabulous Ferrari F40s, evergreen Porsche 911s, muscular Ford Mustangs and historic Formula One cars amongst a whole host of other glittering cavalcades.

The majority of these birthday celebrations are organised by ever-enthusiastic car clubs specially for their members, and many clubs are already revving up for new parties in July. The BMW Car Club GB is marking the opening of the original Bayerische Motoren Werke manufacturing company a century ago in 1916, the Lamborghini Club UK is honouring the 50th anniversary of the iconic Miura supercar as well as 100 years since the birth of company founder Feruccio Lamborghini while the Morgan Sports Car Club is paying tribute to the 4/4 model, which turns 80 in 2016 and remains the oldest model in the world that’s still in production today.

Along with the exotic Miura, a trio of rather more affordable British sportscars from the sixties are also turning 50 this year – the Lotus Europa plus a pair of Triumphs: the GT6 and 2-litre Vitesse. Parades for all three of these golden oldies are among those already confirmed.

The Nissan Figaro Owners Club is also busy organising a big Silverstone Classic party for 25 years of the Japanese retro car, the Viper Club of the UK will be popping the corks on its 20th birthday while the Westfield Sports Car Club will be out in force for its 30th anniversary.

Whether celebrating or not, unprecedented numbers of motoring clubs now choose to stage their main annual gathering at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival. Taking advantage of an exclusive ticket offer, a record assemblage of more than 120 clubs attended in 2015, between them displaying more than 10,000 privately-owned cars over the enormous three-day extravaganza.

“Nowhere else will you get to see so many famous and legendary marques and models all lovingly maintained and displayed by their owners,” enthused Nick Wigley, CEO of Goose Live Events, the company responsible for the Silverstone Classic. “The sheer scale of these amazing displays is a landmark feature of the Silverstone Classic – a real celebration of motoring, auto design and memorabilia.”

Members of car clubs registered with the Silverstone Classic (a simple online process) are offered a fantastic advance ticket package. This special deal includes two adult general admission event tickets plus an infield vehicle display pass, allowing classic car owners to park on their club’s allocated stand right at the heart of the event.

TIN-TOP SUNDAY AT THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC.

• Biggest ever historic touring car extravaganza
• Bumper-to-bumper race action from Minis to Super Tourers
• Exciting new grid featuring Capris, Rovers and BMW M3s
• Big Bangers return to complete spectacular showcase

Next summer’s Silverstone Classic is all set to break yet more records with its biggest ever line-up of spectacular touring car race action.

For the first time in history, the packed programme at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival will feature no fewer than four separate touring car grids, providing fans with hitherto unseen levels of epic bumper-to-bumper entertainment. Adding to the appeal, all four grids will be included on the final day’s schedule under the evocative and exciting ‘Tin-Top Sunday’ banner.

Both U2TC and Super Touring races are already strong fans’ favourites at the Classic and continue to go from strength-to-strength. The former is for pre-1966 under two-litre cars and features Alfa Romeo GTAs, BMW TiSAs, Lotus Cortinas and hordes of giant-killing Mini Coopers. The latter is from a more recent era, putting the spotlight on the high-tech tourers from the nineties when, for many, saloon car racing reached its absolute zenith.

Adding some Yankee V8 thunder to the bill, the Big Engined Touring Cars also make a welcome comeback. The mighty American muscle cars from the sixties were last out in 2014 as part of the Ford Mustang’s memorable 50th birthday celebrations.

While these three grids return by popular demand, the fourth is a never-before-seen new addition, ensuring the full spectrum of dazzling touring car history is included on the unprecedented Tin-Top Sunday racecard.

The Historic Touring Car Challenge (HTCC) was launched back in 2011 by Motor Racing Legends (MRL) and revives the heydays of the British and European Touring Car Championships from the seventies and early eighties. It was the golden Group 1, Group 2 and Group A era that spawned such racing icons as the TWR Jaguar XJS, Rover Vitesse, BMW CSL and Dolomite Sprint – not forgetting the evergreen Ford Capri which dominated the BTCC between 1976 and 1981. Such was the interest in the new series that entries were quickly extended to include further cars from the late sixties.

Now, as the HTCC prepares to make its eagerly anticipated Silverstone Classic debut in 2016, the regulations have been widened still further to include non-turbo cars right up to 1990. While not catering for the fearsome Sierra Cosworths which will remain among the Super Tourers, newcomers such as the BMW M3, Golf GTi and Astra GTE will be permitted to enter the fray.

“Featuring so many great cars from such a great era, the HTCC has already gained a huge fan base among both competitors and spectators,” said MRL Chairman, Duncan Wiltshire. “Its arrival on the coveted Silverstone Classic programme is yet more proof of its spiralling popularity, and the further widening of eligibility is certain to produce an incredible grid well worthy of this landmark occasion.”

The HTCC’s debut on Tin-Top Sunday at the Silverstone Classic will come in the guise of a 40-minute showdown on the full Grand Prix circuit with a compulsory pit-stop and optional driver change adding to the retro drama.

“Right from its very early days, touring car racing has always been a massive hit with the British public and that’s why we have created this very special Tin-Top Sunday,” explained Nick Wigley, CEO of Goose Live Events, the company responsible for the Silverstone Classic. “By adding the flourishing HTCC to our more familiar U2TC, Big Banger and Super Touring grids, Tin-Top Sunday will live up to its star billing as the biggest and best celebration of touring car history ever seen at the Classic. There really will be something for everyone.”

Fans wanting to experience Tin-Top Sunday can take advantage of Early Bird tickets now on sale for the 2016 Classic, offering significant savings of up to 17 per cent. There is also the all-new Family Ticket available for 2016 – this includes camping for two adults and two children across the whole weekend and gives a discount of more than 20 per cent on advance tickets if bought individually.

A little more news regarding the Classic in 2016:
--------------

SPECTACULAR AIR DISPLAYS TAKE TO THE SKIES AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC.

• Hot Air Balloon Grand Prix to be hosted at world famous circuit
• Twister, Blades and Wildcats add to the aerial entertainment
• Early Bird ticket offer available until the end of March

Silverstone already hosts two Grands Prix with the British rounds of the Formula One and MotoGP World Championships – now, for the first time in its history, the skies above the famous circuit will host a third Grand Prix.

As an exciting new addition to the expanded aerial entertainment at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (29-31 July), the British Balloon and Airship Club (BBAC) will be hosting one of its Grand Prix events at the famous Northamptonshire venue.

The BBAC Competitions Club will be organising no fewer than three competitions over the Silverstone Classic weekend for around 15 of the UK’s best hot air balloon pilots – including the World Junior Champion. This Grand Prix event will form part of the selection process for the British Team, which will then represent the country in international competitions around the globe including at this year’s World Hot Air Balloon Championship taking place in Japan during early November.

The Hot Air Balloon Grand Prix will be in addition to the hot air balloons that return to the Classic each year, some of which add to the party atmosphere by forming the traditional night glow during the live music each evening.

Air displays, of course, are now an integral part of the non-stop family-entertainment at the annual Classic. Last year’s festival for the first time featured a dazzling twilight display by the Twister Aerobatics Team – their spectacular high-flying pyrotechnic action lighting up the sky just as Status Quo took to the stage.

By popular demand the formation team will be back this summer – now with sparkling pyro displays on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Added to this, the whole aerial programme is stepping up this year with the addition of awe-inspiring demonstrations from The Blades and Wildcats, too.

The Blades operate a low-wing, high performance aircraft designed for the most adventurous aerobatic manoeuvres and were created with extreme flying in mind. Wildcat Aerobatics are also a crowd-thrilling formation display running two Pitts Special biplanes.

The addition of the BBAC Grand Prix plus these extra air shows will introduce yet another dramatic dimension to what is already the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival. Last summer’s extravaganza attracted more than 100,000 visitors and those planning to attend in July can take advantage of Early Bird tickets until the end of March, offering significant savings of up to 17 per cent.

There is also an all-new Family ticket available for 2016. This includes camping for two adults and two children across the whole weekend and gives a discount of more than 20 per cent compared to advance tickets bought individually.

Relating to clubs that'll be displaying over the weekend:

-----

CLASSIC CAR CLUBS TOP THE MAGICAL TON!

• More than 100 car clubs already confirmed for Silverstone Classic
• Century up in record time!
• Early Bird ticket offer available until the end of March

Already, more than 100 car clubs have registered – in record time – to be part of spectacular infield displays at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (29-31 July), ensuring the massive three-day festival is once again the UK’s biggest celebration of motoring history.

Underlining the event’s ever-spiralling popularity, last year’s Silver Jubilee meeting attracted in excess of 100 clubs for the first time – a figure that is set to be topped again in 2016 with increasing interest from across the UK and Europe.

In 2015, a total of 120 clubs displayed an unprecedented array of 10,000 privately owned classic cars, providing 100,000 visitors with an unrivalled showcase of glittering automotive history. However, it was not until mid-March that the number of clubs registered topped the ton suggesting this year’s motoring multitude could raise the bar to even loftier heights.

Whatever their marque or model, all car – and bike – clubs are invited to be part of this incredible showcase. Registration is absolutely free and gives members of registered access to fantastic deals that include two adult admission tickets plus a privileged infield vehicle display pass allowing attendees to park their pride and joy on the club’s designated stand right at the heart of the event.

This year’s impressive line-up of clubs already includes a diverse mix of clubs from the Mini Cooper Register, Midget & Sprite Club and Bristol Owners Club through to regular glitterati who attend from across clubs such as Porsche, Maserati, Aston Martin and Ferrari.

“It’s no surprise that more and more car clubs are now making the Classic their main national event as the sheer scale of their wonderful displays is itself one of the festival’s major attractions,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of organiser Goose Live Events. “That more than 100 have signed up so early is great news for all those coming to Silverstone in July. With so much to see, the Silverstone Classic is the ultimate annual celebration of classic cars for enthusiasts and their families to enjoy.”

As tradition dictates, many of these car clubs will also be paying homage to their own landmarks with eye-catching track parades on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Among the many motoring milestones being honoured on the full Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit this year are 100 years of manufacturing at Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), 50 years of the Lamborghini Miura, 40 years of the Lotus Esprit and 20 years of the Jaguar XK8. A number of 80th anniversaries will also be celebrated this year including the launch of the first Allard Special, the introduction of the Morgan 4/4 – the longest period of production of one single car model in the world – and the formation of the Bentley Drivers Club.

THE BEST CAN GET EVEN BETTER!

• Visitor feedback gives Silverstone Classic a massive ‘thumbs up’
• Twice as many big screens for 2016
• Even wider selection of free grandstands offered
• Early Bird offer available until the end of March

This summer’s Silverstone Classic will build on the record breaking success of the 2015 special Silver Jubilee extravaganza which attracted more than 100,000 visitors for the first time in the stand-out event’s 25-year history.

The ever-growing appeal of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, staged at Britain’s premier motor sport venue, powers a virtuous circle which will see even better visitor attractions and facilities in 2016.

The number of big screens, which ensure everyone gets to view the thrilling action right around the full Grand Prix circuit, is being doubled from four to eight with the additional screens positioned to enhance viewing from the grandstands. Moreover, further grandstands (many offering covered seating) are being opened – including some at Becketts – and there will be improved access and viewing for disabled visitors at the Friday and Saturday evening concerts. This year live performances will include The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers and West Country rockers, Reef.

The quality and choice of catering is being enhanced, too, with more than 80 different options for families seeking the very best choice of sustenance and refreshment while lapping up the atmosphere at Silverstone. The famous Scarf and Goggles pub will also return having been successfully reintroduced last July in celebration of the 25th anniversary.

All these enhancements come by popular demand following an online survey offered to all last summer’s visitors. The event received a fantastic response, with more than nine out of ten giving the Classic a massive ‘thumbs up’ saying they’d recommend it to their friends and describing the circuit racing as ‘good or excellent’..

“The feedback re-affirmed what everyone loves about the Classic: the free paddock access; the ability to meet the drivers; the relaxed atmosphere and the unrivalled variety of the racing,” reported Nick Wigley, CEO of event organiser Goose Live Events. “It also showed what visitors would like even more of – an even wider choice of grandstands, more big screens, a greater selection of food and improved disabled facilities at our hugely popular concerts. I’m delighted to say we will be providing all of those – and lots more – this summer.”

The survey also revealed that more than half of those attending the Silverstone Classic now share this world class, three-day festival with their families – a result of the notable increase in sparkling entertainment now served up for people of all ages. In recognition of this, there is even an all-new Family ticket available this year, encouraging more parents to experience the non-stop ‘Rocking and Racing’ weekend with their children. The Family ticket includes camping for two adults and two children across the whole weekend and gives a discount of more than 20 per cent on advance tickets that are bought individually.

Further significant savings of up to 17 per cent are on offer for those booking all ticket categories before the end of March.

Yesterday a preview event took place for this year's Classic, where a presentation covering the expected highlights, and a few changes to the schedule, for this year was given.

This year's event in July will include:

- a tribue to James Hunt, 40 years after he won the F1 Championship. His son Freddie was in attendance, demonstrating a Mclaren M23 from that year.

- live restoration of a classic Range Rover.

- Sunday to become "Tin Top Sunday", featuring several races likely to appeal to touring car fans.

- 500cc motorcycle race, plus sidecar demonstrations.

- Can-Am cars, plus others for historic single seaters, GT, and sportscars.

- 10,000+ classic cars expected to be on display.

To give a flavour of the main event, a huge selection of vehicles were on site with many to be found stretching their legs on the fast Silverstone circuit. A selection of photographs now follow.

The A35 van (with windows), is James Hunt's old runaround.

GOLDEN YEAR FOR THE HSCC.

50-car parade to mark 50 years of the Historic Sports Car Club
Racing single-seaters, GTs, sportscars and touring cars on track
The organising Club behind the on-track action at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival

The 50th anniversary of the Historic Sports Car Club will be marked in style at the Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) with a very special parade of 50 cars from the club’s extensive portfolio of race championships and series.

The HSCC was formed in 1966 and the club has planned a year of celebration events in 2016 to mark its golden jubilee. On the Sunday of the Silverstone Classic (31 July), a 50-car parade will show the breadth of the club’s race programme with at least three cars representing each of the club’s 16 championships and series.

The parade will span single-seaters from Formula 5000 cars from the Derek Bell Trophy and Historic Formula 2 to Formula Junior, Classic Racing Cars, Classic and Historic Formula Ford 2000 and Historic Formula Ford. Sports and GT cars will come from the Guards Trophy, Pre ’80 Endurance Series and Jaguar Classic Challenge. Touring Cars from the Super Touring Trophy and Historic Touring Car Championship will span four decades, and two generations of Formula 3 cars will be on show from the Historic and Classic categories. Meanwhile, entry-level historic racing will be represented by Historic and 70s Road Sports and Classic Clubmans.

The 50-car parade will include cars from five decades and cover everything from a Formula 5000 Lola to a Lotus Elan, offering event visitors the widest possible spread of historic racing cars on track together.

“It seemed appropriate to mark 50 years of the HSCC with 50 cars in a parade at the world’s biggest classic and historic racing festival,” said HSCC Chief Executive Officer Grahame White. “We are very grateful to the Silverstone Classic team for allowing us the opportunity to showcase the fabulous range of categories that the club organises.”

As well as providing several of the competing grids, the HSCC is also proud to be the organising club for the entire racing element of the annual Silverstone Classic.

“This is a very special golden anniversary year for the HSCC and we are truly delighted that the club has chosen the Classic for this very special parade,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of organisers, Goose Live Events. “Even more so as the HSCC has contributed massively to the Classic’s success by overseeing what’s become an unrivalled programme of virtually non-stop dawn to dusk racing over three action-packed days. Due to the extraordinary scale of the meeting, it’s a function which means working from both pits which, despite the complexities, the HSCC always performs with huge professionalism and proficiency. This wonderful 50-car parade not only celebrates the club’s 50th anniversary but also the major role the club plays today right at the heart of British motor sport.”

The HSCC track cavalcade will be one of many at this summer’s staging of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival with a large number of car clubs making the Silverstone Classic the base for their marque and model celebrations.

Owners and enthusiasts will mark 50 years of the iconic Lamborghini Miura, 70 years of Allard and 80 years since the introduction of the evergreen Morgan 4/4 – a car that is still being crafted in Malvern today making it the longest single model production run in automotive history.

Other home-grown classics enjoying their weekend in the spotlight include the Lotus Esprit, which turns 40 this year, the Jaguar XK8 which celebrates its 20th birthday, plus the Triumph GT6 and Vitesse 2 Litre, which like the HSCC are both 50. In fact, wherever you turn within Silverstone’s vast infield, there will be huge club displays and celebrations taking place.

All tickets for the 2016 Silverstone Classic must be purchased in advance. Adult admission starts at just £42 and sticks to the Classic’s widely-praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both National and Wing race paddocks, trackside grandstands, the vintage funfair, air displays and the live music concerts which this year include chart-toppers The Boomtown Rats, Reef and The Stranglers.

News re James Hunt celebrations ..

SILVERSTONE PAYS TRIBUTE TO JAMES HUNT.

Special celebrations to mark 40th anniversary of title-winning campaign
Hunt cars on show and racing on the famous Grand Prix circuit
Trophies and memorabilia from the epic 1976 season on display
Freddie Hunt drives championship-winning McLaren for Channel 4 F1 show

The 40th anniversary of swashbuckling James Hunt’s world championship-winning season will be celebrated in fantastic style later this month at the Silverstone Classic (29-31 July).

Hunt’s short but epic life – the charismatic Englishman died of a heart attack in 1993 aged just 45 – will be hailed with a very special public display of cars and memorabilia from his title-winning 1976 campaign curated by his two sons Tom and Freddie, both of whom will be at Silverstone throughout the spectacular three-day event.

“It was a no-brainer to choose the Silverstone Classic to celebrate my father’s landmark anniversary,” enthused Freddie. “It’s the biggest classic racing event in the world and Silverstone, of course, was a very special circuit for him. His antics both on and off the track really caught the imagination of the patriotic home crowds and the superfast nature of Silverstone back in the seventies really seemed to suit his hard-charging driving style. It was where he notched up his first-ever Formula One win – the BRDC International Trophy in 1974 – and where he won the British Grand Prix as World Champion in 1977, starting from pole position and beating Niki Lauda’s Ferrari into second place.

“The Silverstone Classic was also the first race meeting I ever went to after my father died, so it’s quite special for me and I’ve been coming back regularly ever since. There are so many different types of cars – it’s really great for any enthusiast. I would say it’s the number one event of the year and thus the perfect place to be paying tribute to my father.”

As a curtain-raiser to the eagerly-anticipated 40th anniversary celebrations at the Classic, Freddie recently had the honour of driving his dad’s title-winning McLaren M23 at Silverstone for a television feature to be aired as part of Channel 4’s coverage of this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

“It was pretty emotional for me, and I had a lump in my throat just sitting behind the wheel in the pits,” admitted the 29-year-old, who bears more than a striking likeness to his father. “I’ve always wanted to drive that car on a circuit, so it was a great experience.”

That evocative McLaren M23 which Hunt used to win both the French and German Grands Prix in 1976 (and which starred in the film Rush) will be on show in Pit Box 16 within the International Paddock throughout the Classic, together with a collection of significant cars from Hunt’s heroic F1 career. It will line up alongside the Surtees TS9B in which he made his F1 debut in 1973 and the McLaren M26 in which he won the 1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, but only after a monumental dice with John Watson’s red Brabham-Alfa.

As well as putting the spotlight on Hunt’s most notable road and racing cars, the tribute collection will also feature rarely seen trophies and memorabilia from the historic 1976 season.

Adding yet further to the sense of occasion, two of James’s most legendary race cars will be competing in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship, a grid that stars more than 35 evocative DFV-powered F1 cars from the much-loved Hunt era.

James Hagan will be racing the very Hesketh 308/1 which provided Hunt with his maiden F1 victory in the non-championship BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone in 1974, as well as his first three GP podiums later that season.

The same Masters grid will also see Rick Carlino racing the following year’s Hesketh 308B – the car in which Hunt claimed his first-ever Grand Prix victory at Zandvoort in Holland in 1975.

“It’s a tremendous privilege to have the Hunt family so involved in this year’s Classic, exactly 40 years after James famously overcame all the odds to lift the title in 1976,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of event organiser Goose Live Events. “Silverstone is the perfect place to honour this historic milestone and we are delighted that we will celebrating this anniversary in style with what’s going to be a fitting showcase of Hunt cars and personal memorabilia including his title winning trophies, race suit and helmet plus the original steering wheel from the M23 he raced in the dramatic season finale in Japan. To have James’ two race winning Heskeths still racing is just the icing on the cake.”

Porsche interest at this year's SC:

-----

A CLASSIC PORSCHE POWER SHOW.

Le Mans winning 919 Hybrid tops eye-catching official display
Special celebrations to mark 40 years of ‘transaxle’ models
Rare 924 GTR comes under the Silverstone Auctions’ hammer
Group C grids feature iconic 956 and 962 prototypes from the 1980s

The legendary Porsche marque will be out in force later this month at the Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) with special displays, glittering parades plus a predictably strong presence on the race track.

Indeed, a fantastic selection of Stuttgart’s finest road and competition winners are to be shown throughout the three-day extravaganza at the home of British motor racing. Topping the bill is the high-tech 919 Hybrid (middle left below) which has won the Le Mans 24 Hours for the past two years. There will also be a stand-out circuit parade of the ‘transaxle’ models first introduced 40-years ago and, for those with £500,000 burning a hole in their pocket, there’ll even be a chance to buy one of the company’s rarest and most desirable race-bred road cars.

As an official partner to the world’s biggest historic motor racing festival, Porsche will have a prominent presence right at the heart of the event. It’s here that the company’s record-breaking Le Mans winner will be on pole position alongside a mouth-watering array of current and classic models. These are to include the 16 freshly revitalised 'transaxle' cars competing to win the 2016 Porsche Classic Restoration Competition as well as the iconic 1980 924 Carrera GTP 002 Le Mans car (top right below) which recently underwent a full, painstaking renovation.

This is a milestone year for these ‘transaxle’ models as it’s exactly 40 years ago in 1976 that Porsche first introduced the front engine/rear transmission powertrain configuration in the 924 and embarked into new territory. This generation of sports cars deviated far from the established principles of the 911 and were produced until the arrival of the Boxster in 1995. They were a great success during this period, too, selling nearly 400,000 worldwide. The Porsche Club of Great Britain is paying homage to this 40th anniversary with special displays plus a track parade featuring a large number of 924, 928, 944 and 968 models.

Continuing the theme, one the rarest and most desirable of the ‘transaxle’ breed – a 924 GTR – is one of the star lots at Silverstone Auctions’ Competition Car Sale on 28 July at the festival. Back in 1981, just 17 examples were made available to private customers at a cost of $75,000. Cars were delivered from Porsche with fully integrated roll cages, fully adjustable suspension and four-piston 935 brake callipers squeezing larger 31cm discs. The engine was a highly modified version of the 2.0-litre motor used in all 924s, featuring dry sump lubrication, which helped it produce 375bhp. Weighing just 930 kilos, the GTR was good for 180mph and 0-60mph took 4.7 seconds.

The highly original model coming under the hammer at the Classic (top left below) has been hidden away in Japan for more than 30 years and comes with an estimated value of between £475,000 and £575,000. Managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: “It’s the 40th anniversary of the Porsche 924 this year and we’re delighted that we’re able to offer what is surely a total one-off investment opportunity and the best available example of Porsche’s ultimate and rare incarnation of the model.”

With its enviable competition heritage, a large number of Porsches will also be much in evidence among the Silverstone Classic’s unrivalled 1,000+ race entries. Both 356s and 911s always feature strongly in the major GT races while 956 and 962 enduro legends which dominated at Le Mans in the 1980s are crowd favourites in the pair of showdowns for Group C prototypes.

Adult admission prices for the Classic start at £42, with £6 admission for accompanied children aged between six and 16 years old. A wide range of weekend, camping, VIP hospitality and Family Tickets – all of which must be purchased in advance – are also available. Adding to the festival’s immense appeal, tickets include free entrance to both racing paddocks, trackside grandstands and live music concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Jaguar news ...

----------------

JAGUAR SHARPENS ITS CLAWS AT THE CLASSIC.

Jaw-dropping Art of Performance Tour comes to Silverstone
Go drifting in an F-TYPE and take home film of your experience
Jaguar XJ14 holds the Silverstone Classic circuit lap record
C-types, D-types and E-types all in racing action

Jaguar’s racing heritage has always been massively to the fore at the Silverstone Classic but, for the first time, later this month the legendary British manufacturer will be the Official Experiential Partner to the world’s biggest historic motor racing festival.

Visitors to this year’s Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) will not only be able to see racing Jaguar C-types, D-types, E-types and Group C prototypes in all their nostalgic glory roaring around the famous Grand Prix circuit but they will also be given the chance to experience a state-of-the-art F-TYPE being pushed to the limit within the event’s thrill-laden Adrenaline Zone.

The tyre-smoking Art of Performance Tour will take show-going passengers out of their comfort zones with the heart-pumping thrills of drifting in an F-TYPE… with a professional driver at the wheel. What’s more, this totally free mind-boggling experience will be recorded on video for exhilarated participants to take home.

Jaguar will similarly be entertaining those not seeking quite such an adrenaline rush, allowing them to test their skills with remote control scale replica Jaguar F-TYPEs on a mini drifting circuit.

Away from the Adrenaline Zone, as always a wonderful array of pedigree Jaguars will feature strongly throughout all areas of the ultimate Classic. Between them, the XK and Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Clubs will be celebrating 50 years of the E-Type 2+2, 30 years of the XJ40, 20 years of the XK8 and several other notable milestones in the marque’s rich history with special displays and track parades, while racing Jaguars will be rolling back the years in many of the Classic’s most prestigious showdowns.

Indeed, Jaguars have savoured notable successes in recent years including victories in the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre-’56 Sportscars, Sir Stirling Moss Trophy and International Trophy for Pre-’66 GT Cars. The outright lap record around the Silverstone Classic circuit is held by a 1991 Jaguar XJR14 sports-prototype, set by Nic Minassian in 2013’s spectacular Group C retro races (main below). The French ace averaged close to 123mph around the 3.64-mile layout in the remarkable Ross Brawn-designed record-breaker – a sensational marker that’s yet to be topped.

Fans wanting to see all these thoroughbred Jaguars in track action or to have their eyes opened by drifting in an F-TYPE, must buy their tickets in advance. Adult admission prices for the Classic start at £42, with £6 admission for accompanied children aged between 6 and 16-years-old. A wide range of weekend, camping, VIP hospitality and Family Tickets are also available. Adding to the festival’s immense appeal, tickets include free entrance to both racing paddocks, trackside grandstands and live music concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings which this year include The Boomtown Rats, Reef and The Stranglers.

That was a preview only, the main gig is at the end of the month, although I believe access is very similar there too.
