Some way off the normal OCC enquiry, but I know there are a few members with aviation knowledge.

I was under the impression that the letters on the side of a plane, were a unique ID similar to a vehicles number/licence plate.

I was looking for information on one this morning and found 3 different aircraft with the same letters... is this normal.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

If the aircraft are British then try entering the registration into this search:
http://publicapps.caa.co.uk/modalapplication.aspx?catid=1&pagetype=65&appid=1&mode=searchnoresult

You do not enter the leading G, just the trailing letters.

If American then:

Thanks guys. There was a light plane crashed south of Winnipeg last night and the photos show the number as C-FHSN knowing a couple of people from the area with light planes I looked up the number and found two aircraft, non of which were a light plane.

Sadly the pilot and passenger were killed but it wasn't anyone we knew.

That's strange, I'd have thought they would be unique.

A search for that number shows it's been on several aircraft : http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/RchHsRes.aspx?st=2&m=%7cFHSN%7c&cn=%7c%7c&mn=%7c%7c&sn=%7c%7c&cnn=%7c%7c&tn=%7c%7c&ln=%7c%7c&fn=%7c%7c&rfr2=RchHs.aspx

but doesn't seem to be on any at the moment. I think that's where it gets confusing, as there are several spotter-style sites that list one or other of those references, but don't note that the aircraft has been deleted and the number transferred to another one.

ETA - Ah, I see it. The registration is C-FSHN, not C-FHSN ( http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/plane-crash-sanford-manitoba-winnipeg-1.3975636 ) which indeed shows as a Cessna: http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/CCARCS-RIACC/ADet.aspx?id=513260&rfr=RchSimpRes.aspx?cn=%7c%7c&mn=%7c%7c&sn=%7c%7c&on=%7cARTY%7c&m=%7c%7c

Thanks Mike. That cleared up the wrong number issue. One thing OCC is renown for is correcting inaccuracies.

So the numbers can be re-used ? a bit like back when a car number plate that may have started life on one vehicle then turns up on another.

Thanks to you all.

Peter
