Here lies a tale....
My Dad "Harry" acquired a Talbot Ten 1938/39 model in the late 40's to early 1950's and set about a meticulous restoration in a rented garage where he was lodging in rooms, in Romford Essex. A clever chap was Harry, patternmaker by trade and there wasn't much that he couldn't make a good job of. At the time, he was courting my Mum who had recently finished war munitions service on CNC lathes in the underground, so not wholly averse to getting her hands dirty, so many a happy hour was spent together cleaning bits etc.
The whole car was stripped to its last nut and bolt. Chassis was sent off to be stove enameled in black.
Eventually it emerged, coach painted in a two tone blue, pale blue on body, dark on wings.
They both toured Sussex in it for honeymoon, and shortly after it was sold to finance a house purchase. All this long before I was even a thought.
So I never saw this car but I have been told it was much sought after and everywhere Harry went people asked him to name his price. The photo attached depicts the car outside 11 Broomfield Road, Chadwell Heath, my Grandmothers home sometime in the early 50's.
I often wondered where it went? Does it still exist?
Over the past few years I made enquiries at the various national shows but hardly anyone I found who even had seen one.
Imagine then my surprise when just browsing t'internet, as you do, I find a two tone blue 1938 Talbot Ten for sale in Holland!
I mailed the Dealership, a Classic car museum and restorer, who in turn, passed my contact to the new owner. Further investigation proves this though is not the car. The original buff log book shows it in other ownership throughout the years from 1949 until the sixties.
However, the search is now on. Some 580 were made of which it seems 13 remain on the road and possibly 13 or so more in various stages or unresolved. Which one has a beautiful stove enamel chassis?
A lovely looking car though and the new owner of this is bringing it to the UK this Summer to hill race it. I might just go take a look and see what it really looks like in the flesh.

Rick, I struggled to post these pictures. Perhaps you can put me right, and you're welcome to use the picture of Harry with his on your main site for nostalgia or to illustrate the Talbot Ten.

Hi Rick.
Sadly no. This is the only photo that I have left. Mum had a nasty dementia phase and chucked out most of the family photos. My cousin is digging his way into the loft to try and find anything but hope is slim.
I'm just looking for the stove enamel...

That's a shame about the photos Peter, although not the same circumstance but when my Grandparents passed away my Auntie put most of their old photos and paperwork on the bonfire as she didn't like clutter.
Not many Tens about, there is a saloon local to us and I must say its got very pleasant lines. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
