Good evening everyone. I've replaced the firewall/bulkhead and the dashboard of the B.S.A. Trike and the steering box is in place.

How do I go about plotting the route of the steering column? I cannot sink the column below ground and feed it upwards through the firewall and dashboard.

I would like to keep the holes as small and neat as possible.

Any ideas out there? Cheers, Tony. Wink

About a year ago I has a passing encounter with a mid-1930's 4-cylinder 3-wheel BSA project, but I cannot recall the firewall arrangement. My Jowett presents similar problems, with the additional issue of a cylinder in the way!
This might fly in the face of the first line of your post, but can you fit the column to the firewall off the vehicle, and then assemble that amalgamation to the rest of the vehicle?

What about machining a bushing that fits on the steering box shaft at one end and insert a small laser pointer into the other. Test on the bench for correct alignment.

or... a length of broom handle or steel bar with one end bored to fit over steering box shaft.

Now that is what I was hoping to hear. An astoundingly simple method. I'll have to assemble the steering rods to ensure the angle of the steering box is correct.

Thanks very much Peter. Very Happy

Paul, the 4 cylinder was water cooled whereas mine is the twin cylinder air-cooled , so there is less engine at the 'back end'.

Cheers, Tony. Very Happy
