I've long been promising myself a visit there Rick. It looks like it is more interesting than I thought. Thanks for posting those pics.

After a break of 7 years, it was high time to re-visit Elvington to see the new arrivals, and changes to what was there in 2010.
Firstly, the aircraft ...
Plus a few other old vehicles of interest ...
It's well worth a visit, the restored WW2 buildings are especially interesting and make for the perfect environment to admire elderly aircraft - I just hope the poor old Gloster Javelin receives a wash and a spot of TLC sooner rather than later, same for the old fuel tanker.

Hi
re: the Mirage IV there was an item about it on Inside Out just after it arrived, and there were some French Pilots talking about it and the lack of range which meant they would be able to get to their targets and do their Bomb Toss and turn away from the blast area but would be extremely unlikely to cross any borders back to friendly lands. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

The airshows there were excellent. I used to take my father, he got preferential treatment from the air crews when he wore his RAF tie and Veterans badge.
I remember him getting a chewing from an ATC officer for being too close to a Mitchell?, which was running up its engines " Because it was dangerous"
"Dangerous?" The Old Man replied, "They were only dangerous if you got caught in flack, that could make it a bit bumpy"
He joined in September 1939 for a short adventure, demobbed in 1946! He was still finding bits of flack under his skin in his 80's. |
