Its been a funny old year. The damp weather prompted hundreds of midges and mosquitos to appear in the house, required some deft wacking and attention from the vacuuming machine during the 'summer' months.

Out in the garage, despite my best attempts to shoo them away, robins take up residence. Not that I dislike birdies (ooeer), but their deposits on my paintwork and tools do grate a little after a while.

This last week I've been on the hunt for a tiny field mouse that decided on taking up residence in the house, outside obviously getting a little too chilly for comfort. In the past I've used a Little Nipper to catch the odd mouse, but not enjoying the extraction of furry friend from the trap, I decided to invest in a humane trap, a box with a ramp that flips up, blocking the exit, once Mickey or Minnie has made it inside.

Having left it out for a few weeks it was obviously not up to the job. This was confirmed this week, as I watched the mouse appear from under a cupboard, and spend a long time investigating the humane trap, obviously excited by the wafting smell of Dairy Milk eminating from within. He'd clamber part-way in, grab the lump of chocolate, then make haste, away to a safe dining area. This called for a re-think.

Out to the garage, and the trap underwent a series of modifications, that involved mounting the existing trap entrance within a larger plastic container purchased from the local 24hr Tesco, and chopping down some of the 'walls' to make entry more direct, and less off-putting than was previously the case. Extra ventilation holes were added, to further improve the chances of luring the furry chap indoors.

The new trap, now called the Super Nipper, was installed on our landing, and we retired downstairs for a bite to eat. An hour or so later I went to check Super Nipper, and amazingly it had a new tenant, cheerfully munching on a supper of chocolate and some of erindoors' cheddar.

On seeing us, Mickey became a little agitated and despite his best efforts, there was no escape. Rather than drop him outside, we took a drive for a mile or so and turfed him out into a field last night.

The Super Nipper is back in place now, so we'll see if there are any more big-eared furry things feeling peckish....pics to follow Smile

Had the same problem with a 'Humane trap', in the end I put one of the snappy traps alongside and let the mouse make the choice...Ouch!

Latest news: another furry grey blur was spotted yesterday evening, so either Mickey 1 hot-footed it back, or else one of his brothers or sisters is still around.

We've only seen mice since next door moved away, along with their cat, so perhaps their moggie (which used to drive me nuts sliding up and down our cars with muddy feet) did have a purpose after all. Can't see me getting a mog though!!!
