thank's alanb,
i've just been reading up on the MG to VW s/box swap, sound's ok, so i bought a VW s/box of ebay, it's just a second hand one to have a look and see if i can make it work on the pop, then buy a new one about £150.00, which will be worth it for my nerve's,
i've installed all new trackrod end's plus drag link end's, so there's no play after the s/box,
i set the tracking up using a lazer measuring tool so i know that's ok, the camber and castor as far as i know is non-adjustable,
to be continued, lol,

when i recieved the vw s/box and had a good look at it i noticed the output shaft only allowed the drag link arm to go on one way, of course it pointed it the opposite direction that i needed, so i stripped it down and reversed the gut's in it, drilled a hole in the large adjuster on it and it will work on the pop, i've still to modify the drag link arm and make the mounting bracket for the s/box to the chassis, plus i'll have to buy a vw drag link cross shaft as the pop ball joint taper is too small for the vw drag link arm, also bought a porsche uj knuckle joint steering shaft part, just in case the s/box when fitted doesn't line up with the pop steering column, a lot of work but i'm just not comfortable with 2" of play at the pop's s/wheel, the vw s/box is very beefy compared to the pop and is adjustable for play on the input and output shaft's too,

this is the modified s/box,

had the mounting tube machined up that the s/box clamp's to,

trimmed the pitman arm down,

bought a VW trackrod end as the pop one was too small for the VW pitman arm,

flange for joining pop s/column to VW box,

still a few bit's to be machined and the plate's to mate the s/box to the chassis to make and weld, but it's getting there,

made the u-shaped s/box mounting bracket out of 3/8" steel plate, lining it all up to mate with the pop steering column and getting the pitman arm in the right position was a right mess on though, getting closer to being done,

VW s/box etc all installed and working fine, no play at all at the steering wheel, now just have to trace a missfire and tune the twin SU's, oh and finish the interior and fit the watts linkage to the rear axel, etc, etc,

Ok, doesn't lay any flatter than a glass fibre replacement. The rubber seal channel is rusted badly on mine so I bought the grp panel that covers the rust completely and has a rubber seal around it. Need to paint the roof before fitting the seal, so for now it's just screwed in place.
