Hi
I have now got my Austin 10 gs1 to run (on unleaded). It has been in a lock up for 14/15 years and last time I got fuel you could get 4 star. Any advise of fuel and the additives you can get?
Do you need to put additives in or just use unleaded there seems to be so many different thories.
Cheers
Peter

Slow-plodding sidevalve engines should be fine with unleaded, I've never used an additive but I suppose if I was doing thousands of miles per year, then maybe I would.

What I would suggest though is look out for fuel that has low ethanol in it, I've not really studied this much but E10 is becoming more common than fuel rated at E5, which has a lower level of ethanol in it. Issues with ethanol in fuel include rubber fuel lines rotting. At one time, some brands of super unleaded had no ethanol at all, but whether that's still the case or not, I don't know.

I'm not sure how old your Austin is but before and just after the war petrol was more likely to have ethanol added (up to 20%) than lead.

I read somewhere on a forum that people were adding two stroke oil directly into the petrol tank to lubricate the head.

Don't take my advice but any thoughts appreciated.

I found the thread, and i have cut and pasted it directly. it makes sense to me!

When using Two Stroke oil it must be a mineral based product and not synthetic Best ratio seems to be 5ml per litre of petrol.
Much testing has been carried out by members of the STD register. I my case using the above ratio in a low compression side valve engine I have benefited from a noticeable increase in pulling power and a measurable decrease in exhaust manifold temperature. With the slow burn rate of modern fuel this additive is helping to ensure more of the burn take place in the cylinder. The very best thing I have achieved in years.

NOT MY WORDS!

Pre war and up to the late 60s it was common for motorists to use an upper cylinder lubricant such as RedX .

Unless you plan to do loads of miles it doesn't matter. My A30 hasn't been converted, and I do put a little additive in it, but for the few miles she does, it really isn't important
