RACE RETRO, POWERED BY MOTOR SPORT, CELEBRATES THE TURBOCHARGED ERA AND ITS FIRST VICTORY.

Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, will pay tribute to the Turbocharged era of Formula 1 in the Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from February 22-24, 2019.

Marking the 40thanniversary of the first victory by a turbocharged car, the 2019 display celebrates this thrilling era with an exciting display of racing machinery which includes the Williams FW11 actually driven by to championship victory by Nelson Piquet. Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine made by Honda, Nelson would score wins in the car’s debut season of 1986 and Williams would go on to clinch that season’s constructor’s title.

The first turbocharged car to enter Formula 1 was the Renault RS01 which made its debut at the 1977 British Grand Prix. Two years later its successor, the RS10, made it a first win for the turbo era when Jean-Pierre Jabouille took the chequered flag at the 1979 French Grand Prix. His team mate, Rene Arnoux, finished third.

Producing around 1400bhp in qualifying trim the RS10 was powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine and featured a 6-speed manual gearbox and ground effect chassis. So successful was that car, it would claim pole position five times from nine races during that 1979 season.

Following Renault’s lead, Ferrari was the second team to enter a turbocharged car and were soon joined by all of the major teams including Brabham, Lotus, Honda, and BMW. The last Formula 1 world title for a turbocharged car was claimed by Ayrton Senna at the wheel of the McLaren MP4 before the technology was outlawed the following year. Turbocharging didn’t return to Formula 1 until 2014.

It wasn’t just in Formula 1 where turbocharged racers were proving to be at the cutting edge of motorsport. In the 1973 American Can-Am Championship South African driver and later Formula 1 World Champion, Jody Scheckter, raced the fearsome Vasek Polak Porsche 917/10 powered by a 5.0-litre flat-12 engine.

Visitors to Race Retro will have the opportunity to admire this fascinating slice of Porsche’s motorsport history as it is displayed within the Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live.

“The turbo era was an amazing time for race fans” says Acting Show Director, Lee Masters. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate it at this year’s Race Retro 40 years on from that first win in Formula 1. We can promise visitors a very special display in celebration.”

The Motor Sport Hall of FameLivewill also include other racing and rally cars, with a number of key milestones celebrated and tributes paid to attendant special guests, many of whom will be interviewed on the Motor Sport LiveStage.

Race Retro will also welcome motor sport industry race series, rally organisers, and specialist traders, along with live rally action over the weekend from Rallying with Group B.

Tickets are now on sale for Race Retro, held from February 22-24 2019 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, with free parking for all visitors. For the latest updates and ticket information, visit www.raceretro.com

MOTOR SPORT HALL OF FAME LIVE INCLUDES UNIQUE TRIBUTE TO MIKE HAWTHORN AT RACE RETRO.

60 years since racing driver Mike Hawthorn's death

Cars on display include Lotus 11 and Jaguar D-Type

Unique collection of Hawthorn memorabilia from private collection revealed

This year’s Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live will include a unique tribute to British racing driver Mike Hawthorn when it returns to Race Retro. Held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 22-24 February, the Hawthorn showcase features both cars and artefacts from his career that have been curated for a bespoke display.

January 2019 marks 60 years since Mike Hawthorn’s death at the tragically young age of 29, so it is fitting that Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, will be paying its own special tribute to this most talented of British racing drivers.

Hawthorn was born in Yorkshire in April 1929 and, with his father owning the Tourist Trophy Garage in Farnham, Surrey, it seems that fast cars were in his blood. He won his first single-seater race in 1952 and would go on to drive for some of the greatest names in the sport, including Ferrari, BRM, and Vanwall. His died on January 22, 1959 when the Jaguar 3.4 saloon he was driving left the road near Guildford in Surrey.

Though his life was cut short, his exploits behind the wheel of a racing car thoroughly deserve celebration, which is why the organisers of Race Retro are proud of the unique display that awaits visitors to this year’s show and can also be seen in the latest issue of Motor Sport magazine.

“Mike Hawthorn’s contribution to the world of motor sport should never be forgotten” says Acting Show Director, Lee Masters. “The epitome of the English gentleman and a fantastically competitive racer, that 60 years have passed since his death makes this tribute all the more special.”

The display lined-up at Race Retro promises to be mouth-watering indeed with a unique collection of Mike Hawthorn’s cars and personal racing memorabilia. Surely the most exciting for enthusiasts will be the D-Type Jaguar that renowned collector, Nigel Webb, re-built using the chassis from the 1955 Le Mans winning car. It even features the original registration number.

Also on show will be the Lotus Eleven that Hawthorn raced in period, and the cars will be accompanied by a wonderful array of memorabilia including a selection of the driver’s gold medals, a steering wheel from one of his Ferrari Formula 1 cars, and plenty more.

Mention of Ferrari is especially important as Hawthorn was behind the wheel of one of Enzo’s fabled racers when, in 1958, he became the first British driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship. He pipped another great driver, Stirling Moss, to the title by a single point and then immediately retired from the sport.

Race Retro will remember the life of a legend with a tribute that every motor sport enthusiast will want to see. The Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live will also include other racing and rally cars, with a number of key milestones celebrated, along with special guests, many of whom will be interviewed on the Motor Sport Live Stage.

Tickets are now on sale for Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, held from February 22-24 2019 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, with free parking for all visitors.

RACE RETRO, POWERED BY MOTOR SPORT, CELEBRATES THE LEGACY OF LE MANS.

Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, will celebrate the legacy of Le Mans with a display of iconic vehicles that have competed at what is arguably the most famous motor race in the world.

There is no better place to celebrate the achievements of Le Mans 24 Hours than within the Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live at Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from February 22-24, 2019

Organised by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and first run in 1923, the race might have seen its fair share of tragedy over the years - its darkest moment came in 1955 when more than 80 people lost their lives following an accident - but it should be remembered for its triumphs and for the supremely competitive spirit of the teams and drivers that compete every year.

The past 95 years have created some amazing moments for fans of endurance racing. Who can forget the legendary exploits of the ‘Bentley Boys’, and then there was Porsche’s dominance of the challenging circuit that saw them become the most successful winners in the event’s history. Four straight wins by the awesome Ford GT40 is special, too, while the likes of Jaguar, Mercedes, and Ferrari and many more have all tasted victory at La Sarthe.

And it’s not just car makers as the race acts as a veritable who’s-who of the world’s most famous drivers with the likes of Jochen Rindt, Mike Hawthorn, Bruce McLaren, and Derek Bell all tasting victory. And then there’s Belgian ace, Jacky Ickx, who currently stands second in the list of all-time winners with six victories to his name, including the GT40 win some 50 years ago in 1969.

Visitors to the Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live will have the opportunity to admire an exciting line-up of Le Mans racers with some very special displays planned, and one must-see car is the Audi R8C. Audi made its debut at the 24-hour race in 1999 with R8s finishing in third and fourth places, and it would go on to take overall victory on 13 occasions.

Audi is also famous for entering the R10 TDI, the first diesel-powered racer to win Le Mans. With such an impressive contribution to the history of the tough event, the R8C is just one of the thrilling machines that enthusiasts of endurance racing won’t want to miss at this year’s Race Retro.

"The Le Mans 24 Hours is a motor race like no other” says Acting Show Director, Lee Masters. “With a history stretching back almost 100 years it sits at the very pinnacle of motorsport, which is why we are very proud to be celebrating its legacy at this year’s show."

The Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live will also include other racing and rally cars, with a number of key milestones celebrated, along with special guests, many of whom will be interviewed on the Motor Sport Live Stage.

If anyone wants a discount code to knock of £2 from an adult advance ticket on Saturday or Sunday, please contact me. I don't want to post it in an open forum as that's a bit against the spirit of things.

AYRTON SENNA’S RESTORED VAN DIEMEN TAKES POLE POSITION IN MOTOR SPORT HALL OF FAME AT RACE RETRO.

The beautifully restored Van Diemen RF81 – chassis 528 – driven in period by the late great Ayrton Senna will take pole position in the Motor SportHall of Fame Live at Race Retro. Held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 22-24 February, this will be the car’s first public viewing since it has been restored by Van Diemen founder Ralph Firman.

Firman gave Ayrton Senna his big break in the UK and this car has been painstakingly restored in Norfolk, where it was originally built. The Van Diemen also features the Minister 1600 engine, identical to the 1981 original.

Senna finished fifth on his FF1600 debut at Brands Hatch on 1 March 1981, and just two weeks later won his third ever car race at Brands Hatch, at the wheel of a Van Diemen RF81.

By the end of the season Senna had established himself as the man to beat, finishing the season with 12 wins, six other podiums, and the championship, winning the two prestigious national British Formula Ford titles.

In 1982 Senna graduated to Formula Ford 2000, competing in both the British and European Championships. He dominated the Formula winning 21 out of the 27 races contested. That year, Senna also had his first chance to race in a non-championship Formula Three race at Thruxton where he started from pole position and won easily. The rest, as they say, is history!

Race Retro’s Acting Show Director Lee Masters said: “We are deeply honoured to have the Van Diemen at Race Retro and thrilled that our visitors will be the first to get a closer look at this incredible racing car.”

The Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live will also include other racing and rally cars, with a number of key milestones celebrated, along with special guests, many of whom will be interviewed on the Motor Sport Live Stage.

RALLYING WITH GROUP B ATTRACTS EX-WORKS AND WRC CHAMPS TO RACE RETRO, POWERED BY MOTOR SPORT.

This year’s Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, has received a record number of entries for the Live Rally Stage, organised by Rallying with Group B (RWGB), with some amazing ex-works cars and motorsport legends celebrated.

Held from 22-24 February, Race Retro will transform the grounds of Stoneleigh Park on Saturday and Sunday to create some high-octane live action with over 250 entries considered for the final list of ‘runners and riders.’

Those who did make it into the Parc Ferme include Chris Robson’s 1982 Citroen Visa UK ex-works rally car, the first purpose-built rally car to be homologated into Group B. The winner of the Up to 1300cc Class of the Pace/Autosport National Rally Championship and was runner-up in the Group B category of the Rothmans Open Rally Championship with John Weatherley at the wheel.

EGN 78X was part of a two-car assault by Citroen UK on the Rothmans Manx International in 1983, driven by Konrad Bartelski, Britain’s most successful world cup downhill skier, with co-driver Neil Wilson, and sponsored by Penthouse Magazine. This car was runner up in the championship with a class win behind John Weatherley and Ronan Morgan in the later works Citroen Visa Chrono Evolution.

Warren Philliskirk’s crowd thrilling Renault 6R4 was built by John Price and won many tarmac rallies and championships in John’s very capable hands. Warren purchased the car in 1995 and has campaigned 62 rallies including the Icelandic Rally, winning five national rallies and the BTRDA championship in 1997.

Ex-World Champion Juha Kankkunen’s 1999 World Rally Championship (WRC) winning Subaru will be in action. Now owned by Will Nicholls, it also won Rally Finland in 1999. Dave Kenwood’s ex-factory Opel Calibra 4x4 will also be on the startline. It was driven by ex-World Champion Stig Blomqvist on the 1993 round of the WRC.

Other Championship cars include David Wright’s Ford Focus which was campaigned by Carlos Sainz and Petter Solberg during the 2000 WRC and secured its best WRC result on the Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo 2000 driven by Carlos to second overall. The Pilot Ford Cosworth, driven to victory by M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson in the 1994 British Championship and now owned by George Gauld will also be in action.

Other Fords include Clayton Parmenter’s factory M-Sport built development super Puma 1600, previously driven by ex-British champion Dai Llewellyn and current WRC works driver Kris Meeke; Michael Anderson’s Cosworth Ford Cosworth, an original Ford Motorsport France factory car was first used by Frederik Balaresque in the French Rally Championship before being reregistered as Spanish in the early 90s and campaigned by the late Juan Luis Sarasola.

RWGB organiser Tim Foster said: “The quantity of entries for Race Retro this year has been amazing but the quality of the vehicles that enthusiasts will be able to see up close and in action is off the charts!”

Post-event report, my own photos to follow shortly....

SUNSHINE AND MOTORSPORT STARS BRING RECORD CROWDS TO RACE RETRO, POWERED BY MOTOR SPORT.

Visitors to this year’s Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, were treated to motorsport stars, rally legends and glorious sunshine at Stoneleigh Park over the weekend, bringing a record crowd to the show.

Some 24,212 enthusiasts attended over the three show days, an increase on 2018’s 23,100 attendees, to see the mix of rally and racing cars as well as special guests including British racing drivers John Watson and John Fitzpatrick along with ‘Rally Professor’ Rauno Aaltonen.

Event Director Lee Masters said: “This is the third year the show has been under Clarion Event’s ownership and to ‘buck the trend’ and increase the audience in the current climate is testament to all those who have helped and supported not only our vision for the much loved event but their own passion for the future of Race Retro and historic motorsport.”

The Motor Sport Live Stage also played host to F1 engineer Frank Dernie, rally drivers Rosemary Smith, Russell Brookes, Jimmy McRae, and Willy Cave as well as racing pundit Tony Jardine and BTCC driver Antony Reid to name a few.

On Saturday and Sunday, visitors were treated to two new Live Rally Stages with over 120 Group B and WRC cars in action under the watchful eye of Rallying with Group B. The existing stage had been forced to move due to the construction of HS2 and, despite a steep learning curve on the first session on finding the prime viewing locations, the new layout proved very entertaining for both the drivers and spectators.

Rauno Aaltonen was the first across the start line after being reunited with the original Mini he drove to victory in the Monte Carlo Rally, with owners Patrick Walker acting as co-driver. Jimmy McRae lined-up alongside him in his late son Colin’s Subaru.

The number of rally stars must have inspired a new generation as HERO events offered driver and navigator training to over 150 novices and rally crews looking to hone their skills. HERO also offered ‘Arrive and Drive’ opportunities to go behind the wheel of one of their classic fleet while on Sunday 30 cars took part in the Retro Classic Tour.

Back inside the halls, and the Pride of the Paddock competition saw visitors awarding first prize to Ian Medcalf’s Fiat 500 Special Saloon with Justin Benson’s Ferrari 250SWB replica announced as the runner up.

The Retro & Café Racer Pride of Ownership was won by Dave Morgan’s 1976 Honda CB836, which he rides on a daily basis, with Phil Knapton’s 1964 Triumph Bobber as the runner up.

100 photos from Saturday, definitely an enjoyable day and as the weather was so good, we spent more time than usual outside watching the rally car demos, which were very entertaining.

I've got quite a list of people I know who were at RR on Saturday yet I didn't see any of them.

I thought it was a bit down in size this year - in terms of "selling" stands if nothing else. A stallholder we were chatting to reckoned the footfall was lower, too, though that might have been down to the nicer weather taking more people out to watch the rally cars.

I did wonder if there were fewer autojumble stalls in the old shed, there seemed to be a lot of eatery tables where previously there used to be stalls. But yes, I think a lot of the public were lapping up the sun on this occasion, rather than spending all day inside.
