After taking my Commer lorry out for a run up of the engine she boiled up. I want to replace the thermostat but this far I am having trouble.
The Commer 5/7 ton Parts list give the thermostat as 'BGA.5551', I have phoned around my usual helpful contacts and they haven't heard of the number!?!

Does anyone on the forum know of someone to recommend for help finding one?

I think that's what I'd call a 'universal' 'stat. It should be readily available in 175 185 or 195 degree versions.
Does it look like this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/BGA-CT5551-Thermostat/dp/B00AN5WUH8

Oh!

That's the bellows style - boat engines often used them.
I suspect the later wax-stat style will fit.

(W-S-M at Easter, do you think?)

I agree that a standard bellows one will probably fit, however a word of caution- while the older units could fail, they would fail 'open' but I do believe that some modern ones can fail 'closed' and that could be disastrous to ones engine.

That sir, is very true. I had a stock of old bellows stats but stupidly let friends have some over the years and am now down to my last spare which I am guarding preciously. It was all very well stuffing cardboard in front of the radiator to keep the water warm, but if the new ones fail then you're in trouble.

Do I take it that like normal thermostats it cannot be repaired but has to be replaced?

Would be pretty difficult to repair. The bellows type is still available new - but at a cost. I bought one for my TR4 two years ago because at that engine, the bellows type opens up (or closes down) a water port which would not happen with a normal type of thermostat.
I would try a normal thermostat first to see what happens.

Will a normal AC type thermostat do the same job?

With the bellows type as long as the outer diameter where it seats is the same could I just get any replacement bellows type, I have seen a few on ebay?

Yes, I believe so.

I imagine the Commer does not have a pressurized system.

After a fight got the thermostat housing off, its very awkward. The thermostat is well seized so obviosly needs replacing.
The problem though is the retaining ring, item 199 in the diagram, is a push fit and hold the thermostat in position. It is rusted solid and seized in place. Plenty of ease it oil applied and will try some heat on it next weekend.
