Does anyone have any experience of using companies to weld/stitch cast iron cracks and fractures?

I have googled and there are a few companies out there who offer services for vintage vehicles.

Big Dodge's engine block required a lot of stitching, including down behind a liner in one cylinder which took some doing. Lockstitch did it all, although a few places do it I believe.

Twelve years ago now - yikes!

The head also received a lot of work to make it good again, including the replacement of a large section where it had frost damage. After a few years it did begin to seep from the stitches, however by that time I'd tracked down a replacement head so had it skimmed, and fitted it myself, the original is now back on the shelf "just in case".

A competent welder should be able to weld it. You could bring it to my friend who has been doing repairs to cast iron blocks before and would do it much cheaper. Snag is he is in the south of the Netherlands.

If it’s a non stressed component like a water manifold I would have thought brazing would be adequate.

Its the part of the thermostat housing that the top radiator pipe fits on, it has to be watertite.

Rooted,

Brazing is just using brass filler rod and is easily hand finished with a file and it’s cheap. That’s the way I would go.

I am just concerned that when the pipe is re-fitted and the jubilee clip is tightened it could crack the brazing. The fracture is quite large so would require a section of metal brazed or welded back in place.

Big Dodge's cylinder head had an in-period brazed repair along its length, which had given way over the years, so I'd be inclined to go with something more long-lasting IMO. Is there no possibility of finding a replacement housing?

I have adverts out in the UK looking for the housing, I have also gone out to my friends in NZ and OZ.

The housing is peculiar in only being used on this engine and only between 1948-51.

I have considered drawing up a housing to suit using a more modern thermostat and then having it machined out of aluminium.
