Morning all,

As most of us have an interest in old things, I wondered what interesting items relating to WW1/WW2 you might cherish? Perhaps items specific to one of the armed forces, or maybe literature/photos relating to family member(s) embroiled in conflict?

I actually collect WW2 Royal Navy Uniforms, have been since I was younger. As a boy I was always interested in the war and having both Grandfathers serving and still alive I was told many stories.

On a family note, I have been left all of my paternal Grandfathers wartime items. Medals, paybook, diary, photos etc. Due to my interest my father and uncles thought me best to look after the items for the future.

WW1 range finder telescope still in its wooden box. Well I say it's mine, but my son's nicked it for his collection. Laughing He also has my Old Man's WW2 autograph book with the crew members he flew with, photos etc, and my Grandads WW1 Glengarry bonnet.
He has rather a lot of my stuff.........Most of it purloined from his Grandmother.

That must be a rarity, curiously I bought a Kismet the other weekend for a song, alas no WD markings on it though. I wonder if we've a thread running yet for old foot pumps? I've a feeling that there might be.

Have a few items, some postcard from WW1 that were sent to family but when I was little I muddled up the little cards that were in them. Dad brought back some WW2 German dress swords, but I had an uncle who died at monte casino I have his diaries with some interesting facts and figures in. There is also a German diary with plans and notes for some sort of chamber bit do not know anyone who can translate I keep saying one day I will try harder to get it translated we are not sure where it came from but dad was at Belsen. I also have four paintings my dad had done on wood in Germany of him and mum from photos

I have a "Tele F" military field telephone, WW11 era, magneto generator, internal batteries in a wooden case. Often seen in restored GPO engineers Morris Z vans, a place where they would have never been !

I have one of my grandfather's medals from WW1 framed with his son's (my Dad) from WW2 and the Korean War; I'm looking at them cross the room now.

I also have both my parents' service records from WW2, they were in the RN and WRNS and met at HMS Marlborough. One of my treasured possession sis the field dressing Dad carried during the war. It's unused even though he was blown off his feet when HMS Kelly was torpedoed and had a back injury until he died a few years ago.

I've a collection of a hundred or more photos from their service days, all scanned and on my laptop; I look at them from time to time, both Mum and Dad had some incredible tales to tell.

You must be very proud, HMS Kelly had such an active war.

Hi Riley
How strange, I am in the middle of re-reading Kenneth Poolman's KELLY.

The number of times she had to go back to Tyneside for dry-docking, because of substantial battle damage seems unbelievable.
If that was the return from Norway torpedoing they had an epic tow back. and it was shown that if Lord Louis hadn't evacuated the whole crew to the supporting ships, except for a small tiller flat crew, they would have probably not got back.

When I was a kid I won a prize in a newspaper competition. The prize was described as "moon watch telescope" and consisted of one these mounted on a wooden tripod.

I still have it in the loft and although I knew it had been a gunsight I have only just discovered what it was originally mounted on.
"WWII British Anti-Aircraft Gun Sight, marked “TELESCOPE ELEVATION No.8 Mk.I”
This functioned as part of a pair of elbow scopes, one for elevation and one for bearing and used on director for anti aircraft fire."

I am - and so was he - you'd think the Kelly was the only ship he served on but he was only on board for a few months and served the rest of the war on five other ships.

I have the Mark Myers print of HMS Kelly approaching Namsos 22:00 May 1st 1940. At the stern you can make out two tiny figures, one of them is him. He was ordered to switch on the rear bulkhead light so the ship astern could follow them but it drew intense German fire and he switched it off. He got one helluva b*ll*cking!

Just one of his many naval tales.
