Hi, new member here, purchased a 1975 ERF last year. Currently on making the old girl road roadworthy again.

In generally good condition, i know a large chunk of its history, 3 owners. Original is unknown to me, believed to have been a haulier from the Stoke area. Second and third owners were showmen, the second owner had it for most of its life and apparently it travelled the world with them as far afield as Malaysia.

The previous owner ran it for approximately 6-8years before it became surplus to requirements and was parked up. Usually scenario of browsing ebay and got carried away. Bought it unseen, rolled up with a low loader and brought it home.

The original engine was a Cummins NH220, replaced at some point with an NH250. Eaton RT610 gearbox, yet to identify the drive bogie.

As with most projects of this size progress is slow and steady. Spent the last few months collecting parts and in spare moments stripping, cleaning, repairing and fitting bits and pieces.

Photos to follow.

Welcome aboard.

Its nice to have more Vintage Commercial owners on here.

I have a 1946 ERF, doing the same as you at the moment just trying to collect up parts ready to start work.

Finally figured out this Flickr sharing thing. Images should hopefully be visible now.

Thats pretty much how i bought it. It had some old side lockers on each side at the back and an auxiliary fuel tank in between the chassis rails. 99% of that has been removed. Last few lugs and brackets to grind off.

New back light mounts made, all drilled out for the lights and wiring to fit, removed and painted.

New set of head lights fitted, somehow I neglected to actually take a photo with the lights fitted.

These have been a a royal pain in the doo daa!

Tops are a bit mushed and the main bodies of them rusted through. Now looking like this.

Currently away at a sheet metal fabricators to have new bodies rolled and welded on. Won’t look a 100% original but as the build and restoration goes on, much to the dismay of many purists, I do not intend to be 100% original.

Looks good, saving the lorry is more important than trying to be 100% original. Thats something I have definately found out restoring lorries.

Yay, collected the repaired air filter houses.

Not as original but a nice repair job. Just need a bottom cap making and some brackets to bolt them on. Simple jobs i can do myself, along with a coat of paint.

I’m hoping for good weather tomorrow to go start bolting bits onto it.

Good stuff, hopefully threads like this will lead to other lorry owners calling by and wading in with their restorations and stories.

Remembered to get a pic of the head lights.

They are ebay specials and have a side light built in. They still need the extra wiring fitting though.

Back lights fitted, they are 90% wired. Side lights and indicators are working but no power coming down the brake lights. Few possibilities to look at.

Made base caps for the air filter houses. Well, one cap, the other is a jagged roundish disc at the moment. Needs finishing up.

Made a bracket to mount the air filters too. Again, reused what i could off the original, the bit that bolts to the cab.

The strap is an eminox exhaust band, they were massively too long though so i cut them and riveted them to the original bracket.

The rivets aren’t the tidiest of jobs, maybe redo them at a later date and get new brackets made up with the straps welded on. Ideals for now, a very quick easy fix. The original bits of bracket i am reusing are sat primed and drying in the garage. Got them all drilled to rivet the banding onto them, coat of colour tomorrow hopefully.

Tidied up the base caps and primed them.

Zero effort has gone into straightening the pre cleaners. Replacements will be sourced at some point.

Spent Saturday working on it, several hours of work later and it still has a locked on brake.

3 are releasing fine one spring brake isn’t fully releasing, i have a suspicion that the spring has broke or something in the chamber is jamming.

Made a few phone calls and had a more qualified / experienced fitter take a look and they are in agreement.

I have ordered a new chamber but have no idea if it will fit or what pressure it will need to release it, going off educated guesses and their experience.

Fingers crossed.

Fully released

Not fully released

Hoping i have ordered the right part based on the description of the part everyone has given me and the information on the existing chamber.

May be a slight difference in the original fittings being imperial and the new ones being metric, little adaptors are easily sourced for the airline fittings though.

Main question is will the ERF air pressure be enough to release the new spring brake?

Success, with a lot of a assistance and guidance from someone with a lot more knowledge than me, seized brake unlocked.

It was my first of many lessons in 1970s truck fitting.
