My friend Ken needed to move his large collection of cars a few miles to his new location. Back then Ken had a rubbish trailer and no straps. Fortunately the Marina only slipped off as we turned into his new location.
"I thought you said you'd applied the handbrake Mr Scott!"
"I did! I made no comment as to its efficasy.
This one took a lot of work.
and became this.
and this one..
became this..
This..
Became this..

Always good to see a picture of your magnificent Jaguar Peter. Maybe the best styled prewar 4 door saloon ever.
Is your car a prewar example? 6 cylinder I would guess by the length of the bonnet.
Is it much different to this MkIV on Ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1948-Jaguar-MK-IV/323835283834
The wheel diameter on this car seem to be smaller, for example. Can you comment on the Ebay car? _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

Thanks Badhuis. The company was called SS Cars Limited before the war and my car that shipped in January 1939 was called an SS Jaguar 2½ litre. It has a straight six OHV engine derived from the Standard 20 side valve with a head designed by Harry Weslake.
Post war, the company took the model name from my car and used it instead of SS Cars. The post war cars were just called Jaguar 2½ litre etc but when the MkV came out then retrospectively the post war versions of my car were referred to as MkIVs. The MkIV looks almost identical to my car but there are a lot of minor changes both bodily and mechanically. I think the car in your advert has the correct wheel size and these are the same as used in my car except that there was a subtle change in the hub design. Not being a total concours freak I confess to having a couple of MkIV hubs on my car.

Thanks Rootes. The all black one is a Jaguar MkIV 1½ litre. It has a 4 cylinder engine and a shorter chassis but used exactly the same body shell as the 6 cylinder cars.

We went to the Commercials show at Gaydon a couple weeks back and were allowed in to wander round the Jaguar collection, not so many early ones but a few SS models. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

A MkIV 3½ litre. We found a body for it but I can't remember what happened to it in the end.
Taking delivery of a 1937 SS Jaguar 2½ litre (sans body)

April 1st, 1967:
Two months later, same A55 tow vehicle, different trailer!
The Talbot needed rather more power!

Great period shots Mike. Do you have any photos of the cars once they were back on the road?

Some very nice cars saved over the years there. I will find out some of our photos, we have always made a point of taking photos when cars arrive or depart our ownership. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
