I was ruminating on the cars I've either owned, rented or borrowed and was looking back through the COTY list. I got to wondering just what journalists were smoking in those days when they made their choice. The scope seems very large, with for example the Fiat 127 winning one year and the Mercedes 450 SEL two years later. Of just those two the survival rate of one must be about 0.1% and the other pretty high I'd think. Of the choices made then, without doubt my overall lemon would be the Renault 9, a loan car I had after someone rear-ended me and mine was in for repair. Or was it the Chrysler Alpine, where you knew it had gears but for the life of you couldn't find one. As regards the best, the jury is out but I am leaning towards the Renault 16, which broke the mould of cars in the day. I was surprised that the Mk 1 Golf never won the award since it was light years ahead of the Beetle but the Mercedes beat it in 1974. It would have been high on my list if it had won. I wonder why?
So, my question is - what would your choice be of the best and the worst through the ages? |
