Hi Ellis. Have you had a report on the rear axle breather?
John

I have just spoken with Tony, the Capri's owner and he told me that all smaller engined Capris of the time (and other Fords presumably), ie, 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 litre did not breathers in their rear axle casings but the 2.8 litre versions did.
Did these not have LSD's?

Both my Mk1 Escort 1100/1300 axle casings have breathers fitted, they are usually found to be bunged up with either crud or underseal.

Had a series 2 SWB Landrover in Coober Pedy . The central pin/bolt on the front spring broke . The front axle moved along the spring . Unable to get another pin , I moved the axle back to the correct position . I found a heavy piece of steel and cut it to a length so that the axle could not move along the spring . I used some fencing wire to hold it in place . I drove to Adelaide and traded it in for a LWB series 2A Landrover with 30,000 miles on the clock .
I wonder what the dealer thought when he found that bodge ???

Snapped crankshaft on my first V8 Range Rover. No warning, just a big bang and vibration as the autobox kicked down. The engine still ran, but it was rather noisy!

About the only time my Jowett has let me down the problem was unusual - certainly in my experience. I had fuel, I had a spark the thing would fire (sometimes) but would not run. I was at a show and the site wanted to close so I was recovered. I eventually traced the fault to a disintegrated bob weight in the distributor. This allowed the distributor to behave in a random manner. As with most such things finding it took an age, fixing it about 10 minutes!

Not personal but a well-known story. When Norman Dewis was demonstrating XJ13 at MIRA (at well over 100 mph) the mag-alloy rear wheel - not the tyre - collapsed and he rolled the car across the infield. When I listened to one of his talks he said "well, all I could do was to turn off the ignition and make myself as small as possible under the dashboard"! Incredibly he escaped with no more than bruises.

The daily W124 Mercedes 230E saloon. Came up to a roundabout, waited for a gap, accelerated and - nothing. Coasted to a halt (luckily I was facing downhill) and pulled up outside a shop. Called out the AA and found that a camshaft had snapped. Luckily, we were at minimum revs and all I suffered was a bent valve.
