Hi all. I used to post on here when I owned two Hillman Super Minxs. Both are now sold on. One (AJO 849C) was not restored by me (used more as a doner parts car) and still remains out there somewhere. The other (BTL 703C) had work done by me and was sold on and is now used regularly on the roads.

I had to sell them to buy my house unfortunately, but as it turned out the house I bought is actually next-door-but-one to an elderly gentleman with several classic cars including an MGBGT and what I believe may be a Wolesley 6/80. In the time I sold the Hillmans I've bought and restored 4 Atco Lawnmowers from the 1930s and 1960s. Not the same scale, but very rewarding and fun!

The car I am interested in though is the Wolesley 1500 on his drive. I remember seeing it driven around until around 2011-ish and since then it's been sat outside. I spoke to him about it a couple of years ago and was told he'd rather it stay there than go to the scrap men. I also spoke to his son once and there wasn't a lot of interest in it.

I'd love to give it a clean to see what state it's in and potentially get it back up and running. From there (an in an ideal world) it'd be the start of a restoration. I have not asked the question yet but I will be having a word with him soon to see where his wishes are on it.

Are there are good resources on Wolesley restorations? From what I understand it was a slightly more 'upmarket' Minor.

Hi, welcome back.

Yes my understanding is that a lot of the underpinnings are Minor based, but with B-Series running gear. I remember the W1500 that dad had a few years back was a very usable and pleasant car to drive. Mechanically I would imagine that they're pretty well served, not so much bodily though!

There is a lot of MM under there but with the larger B-Series engine for added 'pep'. The Riley One-Point-Five has even more 'umph' more plus larger Girling brakes, the Wolseley's are Lockheed.

Trim availability can be a problem but Ebay is a good source and there's a very helpful Facebook group (and this forum of course!) for technical advice. I've never been a member of the Wolseley Register but it's worth a look:

By far the biggest issue is rust, it can be horrendous: box section inside the top of the front wings, front suspension mountings, A-pillar, door bottoms, bottom of rear wings, rear arches - just about everywhere. If that one has been standing outside for a few years, it will have some!

Great cars though, in my view hugely under-rated.
