The Historic Sporting Trials Association is calling for owners of Dellows and pre-1953 trials cars to compete in a new Heritage Sporting Trial.

The Historic Sporting Trials Association is calling all owners of Dellows and pre-1953 trials cars, as it unveils plans for a possible series of competitive events for older machinery.

The current Motorsport UK Historic Sporting Trial Car Formula state that cars must have been built in accordance with the National Trials Formula between 1953 and the end of 1970 to qualify for the Historic class, and up to 1978 for the Post Historic class.

The later bespoke historic models from manufacturers such as Cannon and Alexis feature fiddle brakes – an ingenious system that enables the driver to individually brake each rear wheel in order to turn tightly and limit wheelspin.

‘When the RAC introduced the National Trials Formula, it outlawed the often outrageous post-war specials that had been built up to the end of 1952,’ said HSTA founder and organiser Martyn Halliday. ‘Many of them may have been scrapped, but if they do still exist they have nowhere to go. We would like to hear from owners to see if we can provide an event in which they can compete.’

‘The proposed Heritage class is for vehicles, such as the Dellow, that conform to the RAC Trials Formula but were not originally equipped with fiddle brakes, have limited steering lock and easily damaged bodywork. Our current sections are often too tight for them and we need to provide something more suitable.’

So, as a first step, the HSTA is planning a standalone Heritage Sporting Trial for pre-1959 cars without fiddle brakes. Set to take place at Long Compton in Warwickshire in May or June 2020, it’s hoped that it will be the first of many Heritage Sporting Trials!

Yes, thanks, seen !

Moves are also afoot to re-classify Dellows [in standard, or even, faux -original] condition within the Classic Reliability Trial rules.

Currently, a sidevalve-engined, torque-tube axled Dellow in the above events, is in Class 7.....which is one below the specials class [8]..Class 7 also has 'kit cars' [specced to the rules]....and production cars 'modified beyond specific limits..'

So classified, due to its apparent 'competence' off road.

The moves will, hopefully get standard Dellows re-classified into class 2 [for pre-1941 cars, and certain post 1941 vehicles of a pre-WW2 design, such as Ford Pops, HRGs, Morgan 4/4 series ones, etc..
Albeit limited to using cross ply tyres...which is an issue in itself [cost, availability, etc]
In effect, this means fewer [if any?] re-starts on section, and avoidance of the more challenging sections [usually restricted to classes 7 & 8]
If cross ply tyres prove to be prohibitively expensive for mud plugging, the radials can be used [I use them...on the rears]...but the Dellow would then run in class 5 [open 2 seat sports cars]...
[A Ford Pop, running radials, would be run in class 3...along with the Ford Escorts, Avengers, etc]

The idea being, to get more standard Dellows out there doing what they were designed to do [aside from commuting, shopping trips, holidays, etc]

Hopefully, the same can be done for Bucklers...
