Hi all,

Many many moons ago, dad had the windows on my A40 etched with its registration number, as a popular anti-theft measure of the late 1980s. They look a bit odd now. Short of replacing all the glass is there any way of "losing" these un-welcome looking markings?

It could probably be polished out - for a price - but tbh I'd just look on it as part of the car's history. How about adding a period krooklock? It must be a few years now since this measure was current...

I suppose it's period to when we first started using it, 1987, but it's not very 1960. Still, this is a long way down the to-do list.

Hydrofluoric acid is used to etch glass, I would think it could be used with some follow up polishing to remove the original marks, care would be required to avoid making an horrible mess though! Confused

I have similar on my Audi restoration project, not because I had them done but because I replaced the glass with tinted versions (mine was the povery-spec car with plain glass). The glass was etched, and the breakers yard that I bought it from have ground it down to obscure the original registration. I might have a go at polishing them out, as they don't look good.
