Does anyone know if the brakes on the early Ford model Y (1932-37) are the same diameter as on the later upright Pops and Prefects? I know that the operating arrangement is different.
Wikipedia describe the model Y as having " an almost unbelievable lack of brakes". Is this an exageration?
Thanks.

Many years since last drove a Y type Ford and the brakes were very poor and difficult in getting it to pull up in a straight line.

Thanks for the reply, I went to look at a very nicely restored van version but found that there wasnt enough leg room for me and the seat couldnt be moved back any more, so the question of braking is now irrelevant.

I am not familiar with the Y but if they are anything like the set-up for the Model A, then they should be quite effective brakes.

Many people malign vehicles as having poor brakes, when, in fact, the brakes have not been fitted and adjusted correctly.

The A front brakes had a linkage on the front axle operating through the king pin to the inside of the drum. Often left to wear and then subject to blame. I was fortunate in setting up my brakes to 'as new' specifications and found them quite good, I drove through Melbourne peak-hour traffic quite a lot in that car.

From memory the brakes for the Model Y and C/CX were the same but after 1937 they were changed for the 7W/7Y and subsequent Prefects/Anglia's/Pops.

I have a good in-depth book on sidevalve specifications so I will take a look tonight.

The 1948-53 Anglia/Prefect/Popular all have 10" brakes and the linings are:
8.72" x 1.25" x 0.17"

The Popular made up until 1959 continued with the same brakes.
