A date on this photo says 1967 and indeed the Council Yard was still there. (Just/Maybe). The HE Registrations are pre 1962 Barnsley and the RNU is Derbyshire general at around that time.

The Highways Department van is also displaying the circular white "C - Licence" disc. I remember my father's vans having these but don't know when they were abolished.

A sign of days gone by was the casual attachment of an L plate to the inside of the windshield. As a Council vehicle it likely attracted little attention from the law. The idea that "Learner" drivers could be allowed to drive or even worse actually be given instruction by a fellow worker would likely shock our younger readers. In 1974 I joined the newly formed Yorkshire Water Authority, and my first works vehicle was an ex Barnsley Corporation Land Rover. After a period of a few weeks it was sent to be repainted in the new YWA colours where upon it was discovered that the Road Tax had expired several months earlier.

Is the passenger front door on the Victor slightly ajar, or is that just really bad panel alignment? The gap looks big enough to drop a ham sandwich into.

My father was the manager of a tyre wholesale and retail company, and I can remember him saying that you had to ensure the doors on the early Vauxhall Victor were properly closed before jacking the car otherwise the windscreen would break or pop out.
