what do you chaps think of a story set in the 1900's and using themes from H G Wells' First Men to the Moon? i've been brainstorming a few things and have a concept working. given the recent popularity of science fiction/fantasy writing i thought maybe.....

i'm planning maybe six main characters, two "airships" based on the Cavorite principle of proplusion, and references to events of the era. one pit i do not plan to fall into is the use of supernatural forces; there's a bit too much of that already IMHO. two initial characters will die in an act of piracy by the villain and his accomplice, precipitating the involvment of the main protagonist and his colleague to rescue his niece and stop the villain from selling the Cavorite formula to the Prussian Empire.
the Tunguska Event might be a major plot point....

Check out a movie called 'Wing Commander' for ideas. It's a sci-fi job but with a lot of conventional stuff involved.

I also enjoyed the 'Firefly' series as it's in a similar vein & quite witty.

i've seen both, actually have the "firefly" series and "serenity" movie in my dvd collection.
my main character is an update/revision of one i created back in 1979 as a high school writing project, as is the villain. the rest are new for this project, and reflect a forward-looking group opposed by another seeking to ensure the continuation of the status quo.
i'd really like to stay away from modern interpretations, although firefly was excellent. the main thing i want to avoid is to fall into "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" stupidity. Sir Sean should NEVER have gotten involved.....

What about the movie 'Equilibrium'? It may help you with ideas.

I have a copy of it somewhere - here's the review from Amazon...

"A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahranheit 911-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression; if no-one feels anything, no-one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbours. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/duelling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but Equilibrium should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. --Tom Keogh"
