I see a lot of buff logbooks for sale, why then are some of them advertised for such large prices? |
Most of them are (IMO) being sold by dreamers who hope that someone has a matching car with no id or paperwork, so that the owner can use the old logbook to fiddle a re-issue of this old reg. no. to their un-registered car. I think. Or else use it as a ringing kit to try and change the id of a stolen car before re-selling it. It's no wonder that DVLA are getting keener than ever on a concrete paper and evidence trail before issuing, or re-issuing, any old number to a car.

I bought one when I built the Kettle C-type, and believe me, the way the DVLA are getting antsy about replicas and rebuilds one has to be very careful. For example, a C-type was not a classification known to the DVLA; it was just an XK120 to them. I know, because I had a 1952 XK120 log book and asked them if they could add the C to it. So, if you are going to invest in a full-on replica (and people who have "the real thing" are, because they will not risk the real one racing), then finding a proper registration is important. I have heard of buff log books fetching five figures. Not too many years ago a superb and well-known C-type was seriously wrecked on the Mille Miglia. Two weeks later the car was on show at a meeting. Same chassis number, same registration number and probably the engine and gearbox numbers changed too. But of course they had repaired it in two weeks, hadn't they In this case the seller is dreaming, but for the right car, an old buff log book can be very expensive. |
