This car has my wife's great grandfather in the passenger seat. Any idea what kind of car it is? It was probably taken in the Southport area.
Could it be a Vulcan? _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

I would guess at a 1904 Darracq. Apart from the radiator shape, note the slanting vent plate on the top of the bonnet.

IMHO Peter, the radiator shape is ideal for the Darracq. Very few cars had a radiator where the top tank
had fairly sharp rounded corners and flat across the top.
The only other radiator similar that I can think of is the Model K Ford and it certainly isn't one of those. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it is a 1904 Darracq. Not sure what model, but obviously an expensive motor in its day. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

That radiator shape was only used by Darracq for 1904 and 1905. The car is possibly a 'Flying 15' _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

I understand that despite being the most famous Veteran car in the World, 'Genevieve' has a copy of a 'Flying 15' radiator that, strictly speaking, is incorrect for her. It replaced the original gilled tube radiator when the car was first restored many years ago.
Before the film that started off the hobby, people were not interested in old cars; let alone whether things were original or not and as restoration work has concentrated on maintaining the 8/10 h.p. Darracq as a piece of film history in it's own right, much of the car is "incorrect" for a LBR entrant.
Ironically, it is the most widely recognised entrant of all.
As regards the photo in question, I would suggest that rather than being a roadworthy vehicle, it is being used as a photographer's 'prop' .... popular at a time when car ownership was confined mainly to the wealthy. |
