Not sure what you exactly mean. Most, modern and bellow types, are wax filled thermostats.
But I think you mean the bellows type of thermostat. There is the opening of a valve like the normal type of thermostat, but there is also the physical movement of the bellow. On the TR4 this bellow close or open the secondary pipe, something that is lost when fitting a normal type of thermostat.

Just a concluding follow up with information that could be useful to others. I tried increasing the advance on the timing from 2degrees before TDC as per the manual to 4 degrees and the engine temp ran 2 degrees cooler but pinked under load. Reduced it to 3 1/2 degrees before TDC and the pinking disappeared but the engine still ran cooler. A more significant change came with clamping off the bypass hose, the temperature dropped 6 degrees at the radiator head. To simulate the same but allowing the bypass to work when it is meant to, I have fitted a 12v solenoid valve into the bypass hose routed via a fuse to a switch under the dashboard. Once the engine has warmed up and is running correctly I can shut down the bypass flow.

I like your idea of the valve in the bypass. I had wondered about rerouting the heater connections if the heater includes a water valve.

I would love to see a photo of that installation as I was put off installing a heater using the bypass hose for the reasons you state. Some people have fitted a manual valve but your solution seems much more practical.

Please tell us more!
