Apparently

https://www.motoringresearch.com/car-news/ford-whisper-strategy-cars-quieter/

They may be for the passengers inside, but I bet the exterior noise (mainly from tyre roar) would be higher when compared to an equivalent car from the 1960s/1970s.

Thoughts?

I think electric cars are much quieter inside and out. No intake or exhaust noise. No gearbox. There has been talk of generating artificial sounds to avoid the danger of cars sneaking up on pedestrians.

My wife has a new Lexus hybrid and that is deathly quiet. I don't hear her reversing up the drive even when I am working in the garage.

The new road surface that has just been laid where the A38 goes by our property has significantly reduced the noise level. However, a wet road will always be noisier than a dry one.

The road outside our local Co-op has just been re-surfaced after a new pedestrian crossing was installed, and (like on another recent resurfaced road) they seem to have developed a new top surface that makes it feel like I have at least one flat tyre.

much depends on tyre and road surfaces. pressure on surfaces. speeds. reflected noise etc we can have a really rough road surface and huge wide knobbly tyres and travelling at just 30 mph create significant road noise.same vehicle etc at say 5 mph..and deathly quite. so tyre rolling noise apart from engine noise .exhaust is significant factor as is road surfaces. you can even get signs waring you about expected road 'whine' noise on some surfaces. though one suspects as fuels are slowly banned we will all have to drive electric cars and probably with 'black box' technology within 30 years.

My 2014 Mercedes C class estate came with Yokohama tyres and when I needed to replace them last December I had Michelin tyres fitted, they are definitely a bit noisier but there is a significant increase in wet grip.
