Another photo of the same scene, this time in 2005, note the additional sign on the wall, and the disappearance (relocation?) of the parking advice.

Here's the Main Road sign I referred to earlier, on the same building ... I wonder whether the Wolverhampton sign was moved around to the other wall, or has been joined by a second example?

Plus a bonus entry, this time seen in Whitchurch at around the same date

Just to answer my own question, the Wolverhampton sign has moved from one wall to the other, at The Shakespeare in Bridgnorth

One I always loved was the torch. I always thought that probably few people understood what it was about back then.

Oddly enough I don't think that "main road" sign is the one I remember, although it's a similar idea. IIRC the one I'm thinking of had main above road and some sort of glass (reflective?) border with an arrow pointing at the sky for straight ahead. It was mounted lower down too, more like waist height where it might be expected to catch vehicle headlights - definitely not above a window. Maybe there were a few around back in the day?

I'd not seen one of these before clapping eyes on the following example, promoting The Cyclists' Touring Club ...

Hi
I used to wonder what a Heavy Motor car was.

I have found this on-line (the character reading programme hasn't done o brilliant job and it's results haven't been edited properly) but you can get what it says.

I seem to recall, a 'heavy motor car' was what we would probably call, a bus?

You might have seen the similar sign that was discovered by the chaps in Shed and buried.

Sold for very little money... Why can't I ever find stuff like that??

There was also a blue and white "Humber" sign that had been poorly restored.

Hi
Here is a treasure hunt target for anyone of our readers.

From Wiki
Quote:
Fingerposts erected in the West Riding until the mid-1960s had a distinctive style. At the top of the post was a roundel in the form of a hollow circle with a horizontal line across the middle, displaying "Yorks W.R.", the name of the fingerpost's location, and a grid reference. Other counties, apart from Dorset, did not display a grid reference and did not have a horizontal bar through the roundel. From 1964, many fingerposts were replaced by ones in the modern style, but some of the old style still survive within the West Riding boundaries.

I had no idea about the Grid Reference feature.

Can anyone find one still out there?
