So eventually the engine was all back together, reinstalled in the car ... and then we had the Covid lockdown, so there's very little to report. The engine is running fine, all nice and quiet, but then it was before it all went wrong!
I've been out a few times - an oil change after 150 miles, with another planned at 500 miles, as the car is not fitted with a full-flow filter system, just a gauze filter rather like an Austin Seven.

I've done a few minor things, like fitting an audible buzzer to the flashers, as they are not self-cancelling, and connected up the hand-throttle which had been non-operational since I got the car, but for now let's hope I can just enjoy driving it!
