A friend came round the other day, armed with a Dremel, and using a narrow silicon (or it might have been ceramic) grinder, ground away some of the stud revealing the very faint outline of a broken tap or stud extractor. No wonder drills had no effect. So at least I know what I'm dealing with.

Have you tried the welding suggestion? That should bring it out.

Ray , as soon as I can get my hands on a mig welder I will, but for now it's a long slow grind (pun intended)
