Can anyone recommend a modern oil to use in my 1965 Humber Imperial. The owners manual states Shell x100 30, which of course is no longer available.
Many thanks

According to the net, the Imperial uses a 10W30 multigrade oil.
Below is a link to an example.
https://www.classic-oils.net/Classic-Oils-Muscle-Car-10W-30
I have used this in my '67 US Ford engine with no problems.
The above oil has a higher zinc content than modern equivalent grade oils...much as the oils available in the 1960's had. Zinc was removed from engine oils on environmental grounds, but did protect engines of the day, from hammer blow effects on camshafts & followers.
Also the above s a mineral oil. Synthetics and semi synthetic oils weren't commonly available in the 1960's.
That is not to say a modern synthetic oil wont be beneficial in an old engine, though.
If desperate, then a 20/50 multigrade oil would do......
I once had to 'top off' my oil hungry Dellow with a Ford sidevalve, with modern oil from a garage...as I forgot to pack a supply of it's normal diet of treacle....modern stuff was like gnat's pee in comparison...but did no harm...any oil in the sump is better than no oil. _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Mineral oils were fine in their day but they break down under stress where fully synthetics do not and they don't stay in place when the car in not in use so wear at start-up is much greater. I've been very happy with Ford Formula F for the last 15 years in both the modern and the 1939 SS.

I would recommend phoning the manufacturers of classic car oils like Castrol, Morris, Penrith, Miller's or whoever you fancy and ask to speak to their technical department.
They are always helpful and pleased to answer your questions.
As they make the stuff They will know what is best.
They will want to know what type of oil filter you vehicle has. Is it a full-flow, bypass type or just a metal gauze strainer.
You can ask about gearbox and diff oils at the same time. |
