This lever was in a job lot of bits that arrived recently. The brass lever can be locked in anyone of 6 different positions, main body appears to be copper, does anyone recognise it or what its use was?

I would suggest the main body is in bronze, the lever itself looks like it's nickel-silver, so I would date it as mid-1920s at the latest. six positions could be four forward speeds, neutral and reverse in something with a sequential gearbox... but that's a puzzle: three or four positions would probably be suitable for a motorcycle, or five positions a 3-speed and reverse car assembly, but I can't think of a suitable car with four-speed sequential change.

Put some dimensions up, I may be barking up the wrong tree altogether!

I think your bike gearchange suggestion sounds good Mike.

Perhaps it's a 3-speed motorcycle change with neutrals between each gear? I don't think it's a handbrake: surely the notches would still have a ratchet effect, not positive stops?

Steam boiler maybe?
A lever to position the damper flap in a variety of positions to regulate air to the fire.
Perhaps.

I may be wrong but I think that is a gear lever off of an old lawnmower, Ransomes perhaps or Dennis.

Yes I did think that, there are traces of green paint , I thought it may be the cutting height lever?

The lever itself is solid brass, and as Mike suggested the main frame may well be bronze, it has 5 positions not the 6 that I originally posted, you would think at my age I could count up to 5 accurately!
