Hi,

Last week we called in to have a look around the Solway Aviation Museum, which is situated alongside Carlisle Airport (formerly RAF Crosby-on-Eden).

After having a look at their Vulcan - XJ823 - which looks in great condition, amazing considering it's been parked up since 1983, we headed over to the main museum area for a look at their exhibits. Following this we headed back over to the Vulcan, where we clambered up the steps for a guided tour of the cockpit area.

While we were there, we didn't pass up the opportunity to have a quick peek through the airport's fence, where we saw a great little Miles Messenger (G-AKBO) and a smart three-engined Falcon jet of the 1970s.

It was fab to see that the Solway Museum bought an ex-RAF aircrew Bedford coach at the Mathewson's auction, featured on Bangers & Cash recently. It joins their Vulcan, and the coach's restoration is coming along well it seems. Great stuff.

Back in the late '70s or early '80s, I was a young fighter pilot flying USAF F-106 interceptors. My unit was deployed to Goose Bay, Labrador, for a training exercise with the RAF and Luftwaffe also participating. On one sortie, I flew an intercept in the weather to identify an 'unknown'. As I closed in behind the aircraft, I was surprised to ID a beautiful and impressive Vulcan. It looked both vintage and futuristic at the same time. Since it was the last intercept of the day, I flew back to base on the Vulcan's wing, which is burned in memory. Later that night, we joined the crew for a couple of pints at the Officer's Mess.

Wow what a great memory, feel free to recount any other memories you have of your time in the USAF Smile
