Hi
From postings on this board recently it seems there is some interest in the subject so could I make some recommendations.
These are books which cover a number of different aspects of flying rather than just one.
Non Fiction
Fate is the Hunter: Earnest K Gann.
Gift of Wings: Richard Bach.
Slide Rule: Nevil Shute

Neville Shute wrote a couple more flying stories very worth while to read.

PASTORAL - Life on a fictional bomber station during the war operating Wellington bombers.

NO HIGHWAY - A post war tory of a fictional flawed aeroplane and the work at Farnborough to rectify the flaw. This book was actually used during the official investigation of the metal fatigued Comets.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution

"Slide Rule" is one of my all time favourite books. That said, I haven't read it for years. Must do so again.

Keith;
I had kept away from the fiction; but yes Nevil Shute used flying, and his own experiences, in many of his books as well as the ones you mention.
I would suggest Round the Bend as a cracking read.
Just reading the very brief synopsises on here gives an idea.

Richard Bach also has other Non-fiction titles interspersed with his more philosophical fiction works.

Have just read it again. Sparked off my interest in airships again.

Lots of fabulous photos in https://www.facebook.com/AirshipHeritageTrust
That is, if you can be bothered with trailing through FB's dreadful format.

I found an excellent book a year or two back, chronicling many of the early airship crashes (!), a fascinating read. I must dig it out.

You can watch this minor accident to the USS Akron as it happens.

https://youtu.be/P4MWd1pKvZI

The aluminium piano onboard the Hindenburg. The frame, rim, fallboard, and top lid were made of duralumin, and the legs, back bracing, and lyre were made of hollow duralumin tubing. It weighed a mere 356 lb!

The piano was not onboard the Hindenburg on the ship’s final flight. It was removed before the beginning of the 1937 season and taken to the Blüthner factory, where it was placed on display. The piano was destroyed in 1943 when the factory burned following an air raid during the Second Word War.

Note: Not pleasant to watch.

Akron disaster

I can't remember when I first saw this, it has to be 40+ years back.

What a fiasco....

My neighbour has a Bluthner piano. I have to say; it has a wonderful tone.

Here is another shot of the aluminium piano - presumably aboard the air ship.

Both photos are aboard the Hindenburg but Ray's is before the ship was fully finished.

It is a very disturbing scene but not as disturbing as the later scene that was not filmed of the Akron encountering strong winds over the sea and losing control when the control surfaces were damaged by hitting the water. 76 of the crew lost their lives and only 3 survived.
