A friend had an old Phase 2. One icy day a Renault on a test drive slid down the hill outside his house and hit the Vanguard, breaking a rearlight and twisting the back bumper (of the Vanguard).
The insurance company didn't want to know, they offered him a hundred and twenty quid for a write off. He accepted this, bought it back off them for fifty, repaired it with bits from the local scrappy for about twenty and put it back on the road, having made a profit.

I may be speaking out of turn, but I always thought the Vanguard was pig ugly. Pre War Standards, on the other hand, were much easier on the eye.

Each to their own I suppose.

They may have looked peculiar but they had an absolutely awesome engine. Imagine today an engine that successfully powers a family hack, a sports car and a tractor.

I'd have another Phase2 Vanguard with O/D. The ugliest of the family but bigger front doors, so comfortable, stopped well with racing linings. Admittedly it had a tendency to roll like a drunken heifer and tramline when on cross plies but it was built like a tank and easy to work on.
The TR3/4 following made engine bits easy to find. It had the charm of a family mutt, lovable, reliable, and different.
