I think that your "Thought #3" covers the most likely scenarios. Over time I found only a couple of references to Dennis in races prior to WW2. One refers to him purchasing an ex-Hugh Hamilton MG Midget J4 in 1937 which he used in sprints. I have not found images of motor racing cars carrying sponsors names prior to WWII.

The outline can be seen on some your early photos such as those taken when it was delivered to you.
The alloy trim along the side I had always assumed to have been associated with the using the name Pegasus, the Winged Horse/Constellation and a simplistic representation of the same. I never thought otherwise. By 1950 at least, sponsors names were appearing on motor racing cars and played a great part in the BBC's reluctance to televise the sport. But old photos suggest that advertising first appeared on the trailers and trucks used to transport the racing cars. Stripping off the trim made it easier to paint the adverts.

In the late 60's my father owned an Anglia 1200 Super, which like several others had metal trim, secured with rivets, down the sides. Rust started to spread very quickly from each hole.

Yes, I've always assumed that he removed the trims in order to have the signwriting applied, but I doubt that he fitted them beforehand. It strikes me that they are earlier - so who would have fitted them?

The light corrosion evident on the body sides isn't from the screw holes though, it's along the length of where the trims would have sat pressed against the body.

Hi
I wonder if DP had a contact at Duple who got him a pair of Bedford OB side flashes.

Plaxton used similar flashes as well on similar sized coaches.

I can't see DP ever having had them fitted himself though, after all the Dodge was just an old tub to haul a racing car around in.

If you look at the OB on this page, the side strips are very similar which makes me wonder if they were fitted well before DP bought it

(coincidentally there's a photo of my old Standard Companion on the above page, still with the OCC sticker in the rear window!!!)

Just realised that it was 25 years ago this month that we stumbled across big Dodge, looking mighty sad at Donington. Where's all that time gone?

Great photo Rick, just had our 25th Wedding Anniversary on 15th July, so I am now wondering what date this photo was taken? Cheers Steve.

There's a street sign on the building in the background for Carlisle Street, and what looks like an "S" for "Shelter Here" sign also, suggesting an air raid shelter location. Does anyone recognise the location?? a long shot I know Smile

Peter L dropped me a line today, he's identified the location of this photo as Carlisle Street in Belfast. Everything in my old photo tallies with the following shot taken in 1942 ... it's quite a large photo so I've linked to the page it's on rather than including the photo itself in the thread.

Thanks Peter Smile

Ooops sorry I missed your question, the collection photo was later in the year, the "as found" pics posted earlier were the ones taken in July. I'd have to look up the date, it was the day that the DTM races were held at Donington.

Yes a few ended up as fairground transport, I think that photo was originally on my (now-closed) Dodge trucks site.

Today I uploaded a brochure review featuring the "big" Dodge trucks (2 & 3-ton) of 1939 - 1947, it's now over on Youtube: https://youtu.be/7P3DPmZpr-E

I decided to do a time-lapse video of big Dodge from when it was found in 1995, moved around various storage locations, then going away to be restored between 2007 - 2011. 500 photos feature in it, zipped through in a rapid ten-minute video. Also included, wartime shots of similar vehicles in action and also post-war photos of this vehicle in its new, post-war, life.
It was quite good fun going through all the old photos and reminding myself of the highs and lows of restoration .... it was certainly an experience.

Last weekend as the weather was so nice, I started up big Dodge and brought it outside for a long-overdue scrub-up. While busy with the hosepipe I talk a little about its WW2 origins, and subsequent activities in the 40s and 50s. Smaller feet than mine also had a go at driving it.
