|
|
Driving down Angle Park Terrace in Edinburgh the other day I spotted this, went back today and took a photo.
The sign had been covered over with another advertising a Funeral Directors on the other side of the road. I've lived here for years so I think this hasn't seen the light of day for an eternity.
As far as I know the garage was the "Ardmillan Motor Works" which was around from the 1930s to the 1960's and in the early days catered for expensive high quality cars. I found several old adverts in a newspaper archive.
Most of the former garage site is now occupied by a pub/restaurant.
And here's an old advert for the garage from 1950 - Streamstyled!!

You might be surprised at how much that neon sign could be worth; even in that condition! |

That sign is super rare, it will be worth a fortune. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Very interesting! I can't remember the garage and I was a Rootes car owner mid 1960s and into the 1970s. They were there in the 1968/69 street directory but not in 1974/75.

Never seen one before. Best would be if the owner decides to restore it and keep on the same wall.
In the late 80s, so some time before before it became a hot thing, I bought this heavy Rootes sign for about 50 UKP in Antwerp.
Two (same) sides, presumably used in the French language part of Belgium (or France). Probably dates from before the Singer takeover in 1956.

It's not clear to me whether the property belongs to The Caley Sample Room or to the Scotmid undertakers across the street.

The entrance does not continue the Caley signage colour although there are two trade waste bins stored there that are probably more likely associated with Caley than with Scotmid.

Regardless of whether it is Scotmid or Caley who are the current owners it seems unlikely that either would benefit from retaining the Rootes sign.

Agreed that it will not benefit the current owner.
So, if anyone lives nearby - please contact the Caley owner to buy the sign. If no one does this then the chance may be that it will not survive which would be a pity. You could probably sell this on for a nice profit as the market is very good for these signs.
I missed out (30 years ago) on an old 50s Flying Austin sign that was stuck half in the ground. It was used as part of a fence for the yard behind a Rover dealer. I remembered it two years later but it was gone. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

Talking of automobilia, this might amuse you. In october there was an enormous sale of 240 cars plus automobilia inthe USA. It all resulted from a collection built up by fraud, so all was sold by the tax man at no reserve. A car much used for racing post war, the Hudson Hornet, sold for $23,500:-
A bit earlier, a neon dealership sign for Hudson was up for sale:-
It sold for $30,000, $6,500 more than the car. |
