In investigating and researching the history of the XK engine, I was offered photos of the only XF engine believed to exist. It's based on the old Standard block, and I was most surprised to see the way the water pump is driven. As you can see from the photo, it is driven from the rear of the dynamo. Was this a common form of drive back in the day?

I don't know if such an arrangement was 'common', but I think our gracious host {Rick, in other words!] might confirm the big Talbot also has such an arrangement?
Seems an easy way out of providing assisted coolant flow, without having special block castings? [Simply bolt separate watter pump to engine side?]

My Austin 16/6 (1934) water pump is also driven off the dynamo.

The Standard 12/14 that became the 4 cylinder Jaguar just had a conventional water pump mounted on the front of the block and belt driven off the crankshaft. http://www.nostalgiatech.co.uk/new%20page%2012.htm

It was this block that became the XG.

Just to let you know Peter that this is, we believe, the only surviving XF engine. According to François Prins there was an XG at the JDHT but it disappeared in the 80's. Back then it may well have been thrown away. Here's a better photo of the engine. It belongs to Nigel Webb by the way.

Thanks Tony, I guess at this stage the crankcase was a rather different design than in the XG. Much closer to the XK.
