I discovered that the all chrome styling strips on the radiator grill and bonnet were stuck on with blobs of silicon mastic.
Amazingly I haven't lost any.
I thought that I could improve on this so I have been making a load of "Tee" bolts from stainless steel strip and a m5 screw.
Nyloc nuts will allow me to nip them up so they dont damage the paint and wont vibrate off.
I imagine there was some sort of spring clip used originally.

Your ideas are inspirational. I will have a similar problem when I come to fit trim to my side screens. The cost of T bolts like that is high. |

Thanks Ray.
I popped down to the spray shop today to see how they were getting on with my job.
It's just a smallish workshop with 2 guys.
They had the load bed removed from the chassis so they can do the back of the cab. Everything was flatted down and one of them was just spray priming around all the edges. Wheel arches, door shuts etc. The air was thick with spray vapour and I was alarmed to see both of them in there working with no respiratory protection or fume extraction. I didn't hang around.
Why would anyone choose to work like that? No one is forcing them.
I really hope they have some sensible PPE for when they do the top coat.
I've been thinking about them all evening and am now feeling quite depressed about it. |

So they didn't even have masks on? Common sense tells you to take a few basic precautions.
I only have a standard mask with particle filters but I always put it on.
I have noticed when painting for just a few minutes the paint dust is pouring out of the door and roof of my shed.
I worry that a neighbour might complain so I try to do it when they are out. |

Got a phone call first thing today. My truck was ready.
Whizzed down on my E-scooter, spent an hour refitting the doors, rear lights, back number plate etc .
I chucked the scoot in the back and drove home.
Again with no windscreen, but this time it rained!
Couldnt do any more today as Friday is Grandson(s) babysitting day.

Yes it will. Shame the weather has turned cold and damp.
But I've managed to get a lot done the last few months so can't complain. |

Hi Miken
That car is looking real good. I reckon the English bodied pick-up is a terrific looking vehicle, almost as attractive as the tourer!!!!!
Your trim was originally held on with some dreadful spring clips that locked under the flanges on the underside of the trim and poked through bare holes in the body to spring hold it on. The idea was very cheap and nasty, but used by many manufacturers. They invariably rusted out, often causing rusting in the pierced panel as well.
Your solution sounds like the perfect solution, provided you can get to the inside of all panels. I'm thinking of the strip that runs along the side of the running board on the door sill. But looking at your car, perhaps it doesn't have a chrome strip below the door.
A far as silicon adhesives go nowadays, they are pretty good. A lot of cars out here have their rear vision mirrors held on with silicone adhesive and it very rare that they fall off, even in our heat.
Keep up the good work! Remember, you invest in an Austin.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

All back together again now. It looks a lot smarter.
The roads had dried out today so I went off on a 60 mile test run to check for rattles and make sure i had tightened everything up.
Nothing fell off, so with everything hot, when I returned I did a 6000 mile oil change.
Gearbox, back axle and engine.
I rebuilt the engine about 20 months ago. I change the oil every 3000 as per the manual. Pleased that it doesn't seem to use any oil.
I fitted valve stem seals which I think must help.

Thanks Ray,
The next thing I want to tackle is the bench seat.
The foam is disintegrating and shedding bits all over the floor.
I will have a look at that in the new year. |

Later on, I parked behind this not especially big modern pickup.
It makes mine look like a J40 pedal car!
