The top of the radiator is obviously the hottest point but what I have read is that it is the temperature of the cooling water that is more useful. The reasoning is that the water temperature in a non pressurised system cannot exceed 100 degrees before it boils so knowing the temperature of the water entering the engine is more informative.

On the other hand, a fan that cuts in when the water at the bottom gets hot enough, is possibly, already, ''too late?''

In other words, rather than 'containing' the very hot coolant temperature, the fan is fighting a rearguard action.

Any rear-engined Skoda owner who has used their car in competition will know the need to fit a fan switch, bypassing the thermo switch, since, the thermo switch is at the front, and by the time it realises the engine is too hot, it's really too late.

I agree with you and have fitted my sender to the top hose. I think the only benefit to a bottom hose fitting would be to know that the radiator was operating properly.

For what it costs, this could be a useful gauge to display two different temperatures. I have not tried it, I have no idea how accurate it is & I take no responsibility for the description.

Despite having set this particular hare running I can see there is a risk that we may be seeking an answer to a problem

that doesn't really exist. Razz
