THE CLASSIC 2022 CELEBRATES 'THE BEST OF BRITISH' AT SILVERSTONE

• Award-winning festival celebrates Britain’s unrivalled motorsport history
• British winners from Monaco to Le Mans in action at Silverstone
• Spotlight on car clubs honouring AC, Austin, Ford and MG special milestones
• Family entertainment provides added excitement over the British Bank Holiday
• Limited number of tickets still available at best value launch prices

This summer The Classic will celebrate ‘The Best of British’ both on and off the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit over a fun-packed August Bank Holiday weekend (26-28 August).

It’s a special year across the country as plans are made for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, so it’s fitting that the UK’s premier motor sport venue – and home to the sell-out Formula One British Grand Prix – should salute Britain’s leading role right at the heart of international motor sport history.

Packed grids – often featuring more than 50 legendary icons from yesteryear – will span from the pioneering Bentleys that triumphed at Le Mans back in the 1920s right up to the superfast sports prototypes which were winning the spectacular gallic 24 hour showdown little more than a decade ago.

On top of its many notable successes at Le Mans, Britain has also been at the forefront of crowd-pleasing touring car racing and the gold-standard Classic will pay homage to many of those golden eras with home hero Minis, Lotus Cortinas, Ford Capris and flame-spitting Sierra RS Cosworths all renewing their bumper-bashing rivalries on Silverstone’s hallowed track.

No country has spawned as many F1 World Champions – 10 in total from Hawthorn to Hamilton - and British-based manufacturers have dominated the sport ever since Vanwall took the very first Constructors’ Championship title back in 1958.

Evocative races at The Classic will star many of those flag-waving pace-setters including victorious Coopers, Brabhams, Tyrrells and McLarens as well as much-loved title winners from Lotus and Williams.

Further supporting ‘The Best of British’ theme, many of the car clubs attending this year’s festival will be honouring magical landmarks in British motoring history. Anniversaries with enduring appeal in 2022 include the centenary of the ground-breaking Austin 7 as well as the 60th birthdays of the magical MGB, family favourite Ford Cortina and the idolised Anglo-American AC Cobra muscle car. All were launched to great excitement back in 1962.

Maximising its supercharged new Summer Bank Holiday date, the award-winning Classic will also treat visitors to the very best of traditional British family entertainment with fun-packed festivities included free in the ticket price.

Adding further value and encouraging show-goers to enjoy the perfect Bank Holiday Weekend at The Classic, tickets also provide access to a Best of British live music line-up on all three evenings – this summer’s performers will be announced shortly.

Lots more exciting news in support of The Best of British theme is coming up which will also include the welcome addition of the finest locally-produced artisan produce and quintessential festival foods.

“With nationwide plans to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, we are proud to be celebrating ‘The Best of British’ over the August Bank Holiday at The Classic this summer” enthused Nick Wigley, CEO of The Classic promoter Goose Live Events.

All those wishing to join in the celebrations at Silverstone can still take advantage of buying their tickets at the best prices but are encouraged to do so before the end of the month to beat the price increase that will take effect on February 1st. Three-day tickets are currently available from just £125 with adult daily admission starting from £49. Camping and VIP hospitality are also available.

Providing exceptionally good value, all tickets for The Classic 2022 give access to both racing paddocks, open trackside grandstand seating, now three nights of incredible live music and the vast majority of the fabulous family entertainment and attractions on offer which are being enhanced for 2022. There will also be an opportunity for all ticket purchasers to make a welcome donation to Alzheimer’s Research UK, The Classic’s official charity partner.

THREE, TWO, ONE – WE HAVE IGNITION GP!

• The greatest-ever sounding F1 cars revving up once again at Silverstone
• V8, V10 and V12 screamers as raced by Senna, Mansell and Schumacher
• The Classic boasts its most exciting line-up of GP icons
• Tickets for the August bank holiday must be purchased in advance

The Silverstone Grand Prix circuit will once again reverberate to the awesome shrill of F1’s best-ever sounding engines at The Classic this summer (26-28 August).

The high-revving V8, V10 and V12 powertrains introduced at the end of the 1980s to supersede their turbocharged predecessors are widely hailed as the most dramatic and exciting engines in the sport’s long and glorious history.

Come The Classic up to 20 F1 icons (dating from 1989 through to 1997) will be reviving their magic with incredible daily displays on the track where they raced so memorably in period.

During that awesome era British Grands Prix at Silverstone were won by legends such as Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher racing high-pitched McLarens, Williams’ and Ferraris propelled by extreme engines ultimately revving to a howling 20,000rpm and producing close to 1000bhp!

All those F1 icons together with Benettons, Lotuses, Jordans, Tyrrells are expected to be part of these not-to-be-missed track demos, which are being organised by the recently launched Ignition GP.

In recent years visitors to The Classic have been treated to the soul-stirring sights and sounds of the occasional V10 F1 car to mark a major sporting milestone – most recently last summer when Damon Hill was reunited with his 1996 title winning Williams FW18 (photos top below). This, however, will be the very first time a full grid of these motoring chart-toppers have all been unleashed onto superfast Silverstone since their halcyon heydays.

“We have brought back the terrific noise, energy and thrill of these wonderful cars for people to experience once more – or perhaps for the very first time – and we couldn’t be more excited about it,” said Jonathan Kennard, the ex-F1 test driver who is one of the founders of Ignition GP.

“Back then drivers like Senna, Prost, Berger, Hill, Schumacher and Mansell really were powerful athletes, wrestling with their cars with minimal or no driver aids, wheel-to-wheel, sparks flying from their floors. And then, above all, there is the utterly compelling noise – utter bliss for any true race fan.

“For me you can forget opera singers when you have growling Cosworth V8s, screaming Renault V10s and wailing V12s from Honda and Ferrari,” continued Kennard. “It is this emotion that we have worked so hard to reintroduce at Ignition GP and we can’t wait to bring these wonderful machines back to Silverstone for The Classic. You may – or may not – want to bring your ear defenders!”

As the birthplace in 1950 of the FIA Formula One World Championship and the established home of the annual British Grand Prix, Silverstone has unrivalled F1 pedigree – much of which is celebrated annually at The Classic.

Evocative races for the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association feature front- and rear-engined pre-1966 GP cars while Masters Historic Formula One revive the stunning DFV era that followed. Now, with the addition of Ignition GP, this summer’s bank holiday bonanza festival will welcome even more stunning Formula One history back to Silverstone than ever before.

“We are thrilled to be showcasing so much of Silverstone’s fantastic F1 heritage at The Classic and the addition of Ignition GP brings yet more excitement to the bill,” confirmed Nick Wigley, CEO of The Classic promoter Goose Live Events.

“Those normally-aspirated screamers really send shivers down your spine and visitors to The Classic won’t just get to witness them roaring around the circuit but also to see them up close in the Paddock.”

Providing exceptionally good value, all tickets for The Classic give access to both racing paddocks as well as open trackside grandstand seating, all three nights live music plus the vast majority of the fabulous family entertainment and attractions on offer – all being enhanced for the Bank Holiday in 2022.

For those booking now, three-day tickets are currently available from just £129 with adult daily admission starting from £54. Camping and VIP hospitality are also available and there is an opportunity for all ticket purchasers to make a welcome donation to Alzheimer’s Research UK, The Classic’s official charity partner.

CLASSIC F3 MAKES WELCOME RETURN TO THIS YEAR'S RACE LINE-UP

• Iconic cars raced in period by legends: Senna; Prost; Piquet; Mansell…
• Anglo French challenge guarantees another record-breaking line-up
• Buy now – launch price ticket offer ends on 31 January

The unrivalled programme of epic retro races starring at The Classic (26-28 August) is almost complete with news that evocative cars from Formula 3’s most glorious era will be making a welcome return to the bumper Bank Holiday Silverstone line-up this summer.

It is only the third time classic F3 has been on the bill at the world’s biggest historic motoring festival and, adding to the excitement, the weekend’s double-header races will bring a very special Anglo-French crusade to a thrilling conclusion.

Maximising the huge popularity of F3 revivals on both sides of the Channel – and thanks to a significant partnership between the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) in Britain and leading French promoter HVM Racing – an enthralling four-round contest has been established for 2022.

Called the F3 Classic Interseries, this unique challenge will take place at four high-profile events – the opening two in France at Dijon and Paul Ricard, the second two in the UK, first at Brands Hatch with the grand finale at The Classic.

Andy Dee-Crowne, CEO of the HSCC said: “This is another very positive development from our strong relationship with HVM Racing in France. It is very fitting that the circuits hosting the F3 Classic Interseries were all Grand Prix venues during this golden era of Formula 3 and having a round at Silverstone as part of The Classic is really the icing on the cake.”

With pre-1985 2-litre F3 racers from both domestic series running to the same technical regulations – and entries open to drivers from across Europe and even further afield – a bumper turn-out is predicted. The record 36-car entry set at The Classic in 2019 is certain to be exceeded as some of motorsport’s most memorable encounters are revived.

Back in the Seventies and early Eighties, Formula 3 was the global proving ground of future world champions. It was where legends such as Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Alan Jones and Alain Prost all earned their fledging spurs en route to international stardom.

Now many of the single-seater cars raced by those luminaries – and others of the same period – once again will be lining-up at The Classic. Argos, Chevrons, Dallaras, Marches, Martinis and Ralts will be reliving their glory days in front of huge crowds enjoying their August Bank Holiday weekend at the home of British motorsport.

“Whether it was Nelson Piquet duelling with Derek Warwick or Ayrton Senna battling with Martin Brundle, that age of Formula 3 is fondly remembered by lots of motorsport enthusiasts,” remarked Nick Wigley, CEO of The Classic promoter Goose Live Events. “Many of those well-loved cars are back competing today and we are working closely with the Historic Sports Car Club and HVM Racing to put together a field that will not only be the biggest F3 grid ever assembled but also one that’s full of iconic cars, many still competing in their famous period liveries.”

In total, The Classic this year will feature 14 different stand-out grids reviving all of the sport’s greatest epochs with entries often mustering more than 50 prized icons from yesteryear.

A number of these evocative collections – including HGPCA Pre '66 Grand Prix Cars, Masters Historic Formula One and Masters Endurance Legends – will double up with races on both Saturday and Sunday. Others such as the Adrian Flux Trophy for Transatlantic Pre '66 Touring Cars, the Royal Automobile Club Historic Tourist Trophy and MRL Pre-War Sports Cars 'BRDC 500' will enjoy longer, single showdowns over the action-packed weekend.

UK'S RAREST CARS RETURNS TO THE CLASSIC

• Display of 50 once unexceptional – and now scarce – everyday motors
• Showcase in association with The Telegraph and MotorEasy
• Now forgotten Consuls, Cortinas, Cavaliers, Chevettes…
• Best of British motoring bastions from yesteryear
• Bookings for the August bank holiday weekend must be made in advance

Stirring yet more automotive memories, an eye-catching collection of once familiar family favourites will be back at Silverstone for The Classic over the August Bank Holiday weekend (26-28 August).

Not so long ago, huge packs of Cortinas, Sierras, Cavaliers and Avengers were all roaming our roads in numbers that didn’t warrant a second glance. But, despite being mass produced in period, these once unexceptional everyday mainstays have become real rarities today and much-loved icons of motoring past.

Their nostalgic cult status has been further fuelled by a regular feature in The Telegraph: ‘The UK’s Rarest Cars’, which was introduced back in 2018 and, since then, has generated a massive following. Bringing this series to life, its author – the historian Andrew Roberts – curated a special display of cars as featured in his editorial at The Classic last year.

Far from selecting one-off prototypes or multi-million pound limited edition hypercars, Roberts puts the spotlight on more familiar mainstream motors from bygone eras that are hardly ever seen on our roads today.

Some are enhanced ‘Limited Edition’ derivatives introduced by marketing teams to add extra lustre while others were far more popular in period but have become seriously scarce today.

Such was the display’s instant popularity that an even more comprehensive showcase of these highly-evocative past bastions is returning to stir ‘my dad used to have one of those’ memories at The Classic this coming August.

“Inspired by the amazingly warm response from the public to our line-up last summer, our 'UK's Rarest Cars' display is bigger and better for 2022,” confirmed Paul Hudson, Motoring Editor, Daily Telegraph. “This year we'll have 50 vehicles on all three days, with a selection of significant cars celebrating anniversaries alongside the usual eclectic mix of those that were once common sights but are now worryingly rare. Incredibly many of these so-called ‘ordinary’ cars are now more endangered than most Ferraris and Aston Martins.”

The enlarged display has been made possible thanks to MotorEasy, the one stop shop for improving the ownership lifecycle of motorists.

“MotorEasy is delighted to be involved in supporting this event, with so many fascinating cars from yesteryear. I’m sure that many of us have our own distant memories of driving many of these models that were remarkable in their day,” said Duncan McClure Fisher, CEO, MotorEasy.

Models already confirmed by Roberts include a host of past motoring mainstays as well as a few left-field curiosities. The former category includes the Austin Allegro, Fiats 127 and 128, Hillman Hunter, MG Metro, Vauxhall Chevette and Rover 2300 SD1 as well as a raft of Fords: Consul, Cortina, Escort and Sierra.

They will be joined by less recognisable – but no less intriguing – novelties such as the Fiat Argenta, Renault 17 and Citroën Ami Super Estate plus some now-rare Japanese cars.

“I have selected seldom-spotted models which evoke vivid memories and emotions,” explained Roberts. “Some are mass-market vehicles that buyers virtually took for granted; others are imported models with no clearly defined role in this country. There are also large saloons that fell prey to rust and/or banger racing. And each tells a story about British motoring history.”

To that end, all the cars showcased in the ‘The UK’s Rarest Cars presented by The Telegraph and MotorEasy’ collection will have their own tales told on individual display boards. Visitors with their own recollections will also be able to share their personal memories with the current owners of these often maligned and neglected motoring stalwarts.

As last year, the special display of memorable yet fast vanishing rep-mobiles will perfectly complement the hundreds and hundreds of legendary racing cars plus thousands and thousands of much cherished collectors’ cars all taking pride of position on and off the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit at The Classic. What’s more, they will add a further dimension to the festival’s 2022 theme: ‘The Best of British’.

For a long three-day weekend in high summer, Silverstone’s paddocks are packed with unrivalled multitudes of retro race cars all revving up to renew old rivalries. Meanwhile, the infield car displays have thousands upon thousands of treasured classic cars from yesteryear, many celebrating important model and marque milestones with record-breaking parades on the famous Grand Prix track.

Providing exceptionally good value, all tickets for The Classic include access to Foodie Fest as well as both racing paddocks, open trackside grandstand seating, all three nights of live music plus the vast majority of the fabulous family entertainment and attractions on offer – all being enhanced for the Bank Holiday in 2022.

STUNNING LEWIS HAMILTON CELEBRATION AT THE CLASSIC

• All seven World Championship winning cars on display
• For the first time all the title winners will be showcased together
• Record breaking achievements hailed at Silverstone
• Further fuel to the festival’s ‘Best of British’ theme

In a special tribute to Sir Lewis Hamilton, all seven of his World Championship winning Formula One cars will be displayed at The Classic this summer (26-28 August), courtesy of the Mercedes-AMG and McLaren Formula One teams.

It will be the first time ever that all seven of Hamilton’s title winners have been seen together – and where better to stage such a spectacular showcase with fans able to get up close to the cars than at Silverstone, the circuit on which he has enjoyed so much success and public adulation.

To date, the 37-year-old sporting superstar has won a record-breaking eight home British Grands Prix at the legendary Northamptonshire venue – an unprecedented number which could be further extended by the time The Classic opens its gates over the bumper August Bank Holiday weekend.

The not-to-be-missed first-ever public display of all seven title winners includes the #22 McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 in which Hamilton won his maiden crown in 2008 plus the six #44 Mercedes’ in which he won further titles in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Born less than 50 miles from Silverstone in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton cut his teeth racing karts from the age of eight. He then switched to single-seaters in 2001, graduating to Formula One with McLaren in 2007 having amassed multiple junior titles.

As well as winning a joint-record seven World Drivers’ Championship crowns (tied with Michael Schumacher), he holds the record for most F1 wins (103), most pole positions (103) and most podium finishes (183), among other supreme achievements. He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours List.

“It’s a real privilege for us to have all seven of Lewis’ title winners on show at The Classic this summer,” confirmed Nick Wigley, CEO of The Classic promoter Goose Live Events. “Lewis is already a legend and his incredible successes will forever be celebrated as a major milestone in motor sport history. This very special display will also be another of the standout highlights under this year’s ‘Best of British’ banner at The Classic.”

All seven Lewis Hamilton title winners will be exhibited in an exciting new feature area set right at the heart of the three-day Bank Holiday festival.

Formula One fans coming to The Classic will also be treated to packed grids of evocative Grand Prix cars ranging from the 1930s right up to the end of the DFV era in 1985. What’s more, Silverstone will also reverberate once again to the mind-blowing sounds of spectacular V8, V10 and V12 F1 cars from the 1990s.
