Spotted quite a few classics on my way home last night. 4 or 5 Morgans, a lovely prewar Citroën tourer, a Morris 1000 and a Triumph 2000. They were all headed the same direction down through South Somerset and were all pretty close together, I did wonder if they were on a run or club heading to a weekend event?

Seen at Gaydon yesterday.

There were quite a lot of older vehicles out and about yesterday seen between Swindon and Gaydon.
Notably pulling out of a petrol station a pale green Daimler V8 version of the Jaguar MkII.

I'm guessing that's Holland as in Lincolnshire?

I wondser who was driving that tow car with the green "L"s.
The size of that trailer makes me think that the gross train weight (MAM)just might exceed 3,500kg.

I would think it very unwise for a learner to be driving, even experienced drivers can have problems with trailers and caravans.

I didn't notice those when I posted the photo. I imagine that, like a lot of cars you see on L plates, it's not actually the learner at the wheel. People don't seem to follow the rules of only having those on display when the learner is actually driving - I see plenty of cars showing L plates with only one person in the car.

Mike:
Gren Ls aren't legal for Learners they are used by some recently passed drivers for the same reason others sometimes use green P plate, just as a plea for consideration by other drivers.
There is or was a similar thing in NI with Orange P plates but there they were a legal requirement.

yes green l is not an official sign, it is just a magnet for impatiant drivers to affect you.
they have also changed the law so you can now tow over 750 kg's without taking a test, which was the law if anyone passed after i think the year 200.

Consul, that is only partially true.
This was what was actually permitted or otherwise after the licence change, you could tow over 750 in certain cases.

Quite difficult to catch exactly what colour the Dyane is on the trailer but it looks orange to me. If it is then it's most likely the one my friend recently sold to a chap who has a small collection of classic Citroëns.

The actual weight of the trailer & load permitted, is really down to the gross train weight [GTW], which is often displayed under the bonnet.

My Daihatsu 4Trak has a GTW [max weight of loaded vehicle & trailer] of 5.75 tonnes.
Subtracting the loaded weight of the vehicle from that figure allows the 4Trak to tow at least 3.5 tonnes.
Hence a 4Trak was a farmer's choice, if not over well endowed financially.

My daily Suzuki Grand Vitara [still 20 years old!], sadly made this century, can only tow 2 tonnes, according to the plate under the bonnet.
B###dy thing still costs me ten pensionquids a month more to tax than the Daihatsu!
However, with the cost of diesel today, and its average 30-33 mpgs fuel consumption, the 4Trak works out slightly more costly to run than the petrol 2 litre Suzuki [33-35 mpgs on average...my average, not What Car's!]
Hence why its currently parked up the top of my garden!
That twin axle trailer won't weigh as much as first appears. It's is a proprietary trailer, not a home made effort, so with the Dyane on the back, it probably weighs less than 2 tonnes all told?

The license change came about in January 1997.
Along with the loss of C1 category by default as well.
Recent changes to B & B+E entitlements are as Penman has so ably illustrated....
However, in an Emergency [as defined on the spot]..a Cat B-only driver was permitted to tow another vehicle to the ''nearest safe location''.......

That provision did not work for a Cat C driver towing another vehicle...the driver of the prime mover had to hold a valid C+E licence.
