Hi,
Today I changed the oil and filter on my Ford Zephyr. In the bowl I used to collect the old drained oil I noticed some small particles, no more than a millimetre in size. They break up when rubbed between the fingers. Do you think this is carbon. Surely the oil filter should be picking these up. These were noticed last oil change as well. On the last oil change i noticed I had a faulty oil filter bypass valve. I wonder If the replacement is faulty. the engine has done 109,000 miles approx and as far as I know has never been touched apart from a possible conversion to unleaded. Any ideas?
Thanking you in advance, Cheers. Des.

Hi Des,

If they are not attracted by a magnet then I don't think I would worry about them. If they appear to be metalic but are not attracted magnetically then it's possible that they could be flakes of big end shell bearing material resulting from fatigue failure. If this is the case then the big ends will progressively knock themselves out but you will get plenty of audible warning. I would drop the sump and check them if you plan any continental tours in the car.

If they are magnetic then it's difficult to say what their source might be and I think the sump off inspection might be more urgent.

Hi
The bits you found. Are they metal?

If yes the y are then thats you engine
No, on a serriuos note if teh are meatl and a magent picks them upthen something is wrong inside the engine, if they are not magnetic they are bearing metal or The piston skirt. Try and find out what tehy are.

If they are not metal they might be from the Oil filter, I had a Fram filter what was breaking up.
Hope this helps.
