Those are the symptoms (no its not Swine flu)
Billy is poorly, any tips?
Seems to be getting worse over last 1000 miles and last night took me 10 hours to get back from Bangor (270 miles)....
Billy actually refused a hill start without slipping the clutch in 1st.
Would not do more than 35 mph without jerking and spluttering.
Starts easy, ticks over no probs, revs ok. Only when under light load he is sick, under heavy load he is ok (ish)
??????
Cheers guys

Bad petrol/water in it? Petrol filter blocked, air hole in tank cap blocked, carb jets blocked - has it got a Stromberg carb?
HT leads tracking/cracked cap/faulty coil or condensor. Timing slipped
These are the easy ones to check first _________________ Rover P2

Could it be a weak mixture under light load ?. Try pulling the choke out a wee bit next time it plays up,if there's a temporary improvement it could be an air leak or partially blocked jet. |

Thanks chaps!
Have tried easing out the choke, made no differance - even full choke!
Lots of people telling me the stanndard carb has poor history so am researching a replacement. Any ideas on companies to try?
Cheers

That sounds a bit drastic. What make and model of carb is it? It might be cheaper to pay for a visit to a rolling road.

Could be dirt in the petrol - specifically a blocked, or partially-blocked main jet in the carb. I would suggest stripping and cleaning as a first move, before considering a replacement. |

John, what carb are you using? The report of it running OK under load is confusing. It does sound like the carb is knackered. My Midget would not run nicely so I replaced all the carb internals, this did the trick. Good luck. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

I had similar problems with my 1931 Austin 16/6. It turned out to be a leaking inlet manifold gasket. After I fitted new nuts and tightened them the engine returned to its normal self. It might be worth checking the inlet manifold gasket and carb. gasket. |

If it is an air leak or partially blocked jets etc the mixture will be weak. One way to confirm it (without a colortune etc) is to whip ot the plugs and see what colour they are.Assuming they are the right ones for the engine they should be coffee brown,if they are white the mixture is probably weak,if they are black too rich or the engine is burning oil.
You can sometimes confirm manifold leaks by trickling oil round the joins, with the engine idling,if it gets sucked in and blue smoke comes out the exhaust you have found your leak. |

Got a Daimler V8 250 that did that turned out to be a condencer in the end though it took a long time and a long way round to get there (including a faulty coil from a well known Daimler parts supplier that just didnt work on the V8 but has done stirling service on my little Standard Ten for the last two years) |

Again - many thanks for the ideas... keep 'em coming!
Off to get married (in Dittisham The Combe House Hotel) so busy for a while, will have a play with Billy at the weekend.
Cheers

I think it sounds electrical - if ticks over OK but coughs and splutters under load I would be checking the dizzy cap, the plug leads and the timing. You say it runs OK (ish) under load but won't do more than 35 mph so clearly it is when the engine is revving that the problem occurs. _________________ David H
