I drained the oil out of the Hunter today and it was filthy. I have run the engine with fresh oil but it doesnt look like the gauze in the oil pump is allowing much oil up to the rocker gear.
To remove the sump i have to drop the front cross member and lift the engine from above..not impossible at the moment but a lot of fuss.
My question is this...could i drain the oil..pour in say 5 litres of parafin and leave it for a few days to clean up the oil pump gauze and the sump..drain it..run the engine with flushing oil and then fill it with fresh oil.
Can anyone see a problem with this idea?

Sounds like a plan, you could even remove the pugs and spin the engine round with the paraffin in it to pump it round s bit before the flushing oil.

I would not recommend at all running engine with paraffin - the sludge could block vital oilways.

You must remove the the sump to cleam it out - then use diesel grade oil as thick as you can get for 500 miles to clean the engine out

I wasn't planning to run the engine with paraffin in it..just using it to soften up the heavy dirt that covered this engine..this is what the top end looked like..

I cleaned the top end by taking it apart.

Bite the bullet John. Take the engine out and clean it properly. The most trouble I have with old cars is jobs being half done. Stick in a new timing chain while you are at it. Then clean and paint the engine and bay. I can assure you that you will feel a lot happier and you will sleep like a baby. Good luck.

I agree with Nic.

You won't shift the muck unless you give it a good brushing off.

Peter.
