Had a similar problem years ago with an A35. Coil mounted on the dynamo. The clamp around the coil had cracked the coil case and it was slowly loosing oil. Eventually it displayed exactly the symptoms described.
Only found it because the vehicle appeared to have an oil leak where there was no oil!!

I don't think - up to now - that a clogged air filter has been mentioned. An engine needs lots of air as well as fuel and will not run well with a shortage of either. You say "pulling the choke out makes no difference", which it probably won't if the air filter is clogged. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

and.......... months later!
It was a carb full of water!
Cleaned out fuel pump, carb, tank and fitted new filter. Also new rubber seal on filler cap just in case.
2,000 miles later all fine.
He goes on and on, brilliant too in the snow as tyres are narrow.
