Any idea if i can change the gearing in the rear axle

I am thinking of putting a 2.5 turbo diesel engine in my for f350 1955 fire truck camper.I would like to try and keep the original rear axle but i am not sure if the gearing will be ok in the axle.My axle is the kind thats in two halfs.It has twin rear wheels.Any info would be great thank you Pete
