hi,

i have inherited a 61 humber super snipe australian delivered, and am having trouble finding info on general maintenance/workshop manuals etc for the engine and auto trans.

with the auto trans i am unable to find a fill point as it doesnt have a dipstick and filler tube. it leaks a lot of transmission oil at the moment and as a result it doenst drive, also what oil is recommended for this transmission?

any help would be much appreciated

You are meant to fill them through the dip stick filler tube. The fluid is ATF type A or type A suffix A.

Instructions say: "Pour in 10 pints of ATF through the dipstick orifice or filler tube. Start the engine and allow to idle for one minute in L selector position. With the engine still idling in L (or in P) slowly add sufficient ATF to bring the level up to the"Full" mark on the dip stick.

Refill capacity is approx. 14 pints. DO NOT OVERFILL."

"The difference between the"Full" and "Low" marks is not less than 1 pint."

I've never owned an (dreaded) automatic but the dip stick tube should emerge from the transmission sump pan and probably emerges somewhere near the bulkhead (firewall, what are they called down under?) on one side or t'other of the engine. Start looking underneath if you can't spot it from above.

Borg Warner DG boxes have dipstick on the side accesible inside from a trap door/grommet from the transmission tunnel

From an earlier post I think Snipes had the "modern" BW35 box which has a curly tube with long spring bendy dipstick emerging up near the top of the bulkhead in the engine compartment.

thanks people, i cannot see anything obvious in the engine bay near the firewall (aussie talk) so i'll have a look at the trans tunnel inside and see if something there shines some light.

You really need a WSM - try to find the model name & number there will be a plate on the LHS of the box.

The DG's were used on Jags and Rover 3 Litres till 1966 till replaced by the cheaper, lighter, smaller and less refined BW35. Spares are not so easy now for DG though

Does it look lile this?

hi phil,

my box is covered in oil and dust to make too much sense of it Very Happy but from what i can make out it is the same as the one in the pic. i have a plan to get the pressure cleaner onto the underbody at some stage soon so i can make sense of what is under there. before i got the car it was used on a farm as a runabout which left lots of dirt caked on wherever there was a oil or grease "wet spot"

i went and had a look at my trans and it looks somewhat different i tried to take some in car shots but i dont think they turned out too good, i'll need to put them on the computer before i see if they are good enough. i cannot find an id plate which, if it was the same as yours, would be under the filler tube. the dirt and oil dont help much either! i think i'll top up the trans and move the car out of the shed and pressure clean it so i can see what im doing.

does anyone know the modern equivalent for shell donax t.6?

cheers

Comma AQF and in fact any non-Dexron Ford spec ATF

It is possible then - that is is a BW35 - again it should have a label in a similar place although some reconditioners remove these or paint them over especially if upgraded to the current spec.

The BW35 does not have the Torque Converter lockup so it is much thinner and holds less ATF which is just as well as it lacks the drain plug the DG type has so the only way to get the oil out is to remove it and even then not all will drain out.

Different car manufacturtes had valve bodies to give varying change up speeds/ 2nd speed start and/or shift pattern. The old type is PNDLR later ones used PRNDL. These were mainly column levers as floor ones most often used D1/D2 or D, 2, 1
