Rich

I snapped the half shaft on my Frogeye, back in 1970!

I had to do the repair at the kerbside. The shaft was out in 15 minutes or so but it took four more hours to get the inch of the broken splined end out of the diff.

Good luck with your repair.

Brian

That is exactly the problem I've got at the moment! The broken off piece is stuck in the diff so it looks like the diff housing will have to come apart to get it out. This is made even more difficult by the fact that the car isn't drivable so we can't get it on the ramps Sad

Removing the halfshaft was the easy part.

I guess you've tried lassooing it with a noose of wire?

It's stuck in too far. I tried fixing a magnet to the end of a long pole and sticking it up the tube, but the broken off piece seems to be jammed tight. Oh well. I have got the car up on axle stands so I can now make a start on the diff bolts. Sad

This might be a bit late!

Since you've got to take the opposite half-shaft out anyway, to get the diff out, can't the broken bit be punched out from the other side?

This probably depends on the design of the diff, but I seem to recall it worked on my '34 MG J2 which had a Morris 8 rear axle.
I think the Morris half-shafts were over-powered by the awesome power of the Aquaplane Ford engine!

I got the A35 back on the road last week. In the end I had to remove the diff, but once it was out the broken piece of halfshaft could easily be pushed out. A quick going over with a magnet to remove all traces of swarf then back in. A new fuel filter was a five minute job to fit, which involved cutting a small section (about 5 inches) out of the fuel line. Touch wood, the Austin seems to be running well, although the double-declutching necessary when changing gear, combined with a heavy clutch pedal, make driving in traffic very tiring Sad

Glad to hear you are back on the road. Smile

Not a bad idea to remove diff anyway as it allows you to remove any swarf as you say.

A couple of pictures from the job:

snapped halfshaft.

Yesterday I was idly browsing the A30/A35 Owners Club website when I saw a load of A35 parts free to good home. So I went down to Bexley today, and came back with loads of great parts, a mixture of new, new old stock and good secondhand items which I am very pleased with. There are rare parts such as an original grill muff, recon carb, BMC inner sill panel, boot hinges, new gear gaitor, window glass, distributors, master cylinder, new pedal rubbers, indictor lenses, and loads of other stuff Very Happy

And the Black Pig with its proud owner Smile

Note the bent bumper caused by towing - if anyone has a pair of decent saloon bumpers I would like to hear from them.

You should have called in for a cuppa and to see Reckless.

I see your drive is the same as ours. Smile

Got the spotlights working Smile

And changed the horrible plastic indicator lenses for the proper glass ones, these came with the free spares. I also replaced the split gear gaitor for the new one, and changed the pedal rubbers for new ones, the originals had completely disintigrated.

Before

After

Tried the period radiator muff for size, unfortunately it ran a little hot with it fitted despite being open, so I think I'll sell it and use the money to get a decent grill for the car instead Sad

Anyone got any Desmo wing mirror extensions?

I can't see a thing out of my mirrors because they've been positioned too far inboard Sad
