I was working through an archive today and discovered this little gem -

January 1914

"An ingenious plan has been adopted by the Todmorden Corporation on account of the difficulty of horsing its fire engine. According to the Manchester Guardian, in case of fire the engine will be hitched on to one of the Corporation motor omnibuses, which will then tow it to the scence of the action. In a test of this remarkable device the omnibus and engine attained a speed of twenty miles per hour. This will probably be only a temporary arrangement, for the Watch Committee has decided to recommend the purchase of an up-to-date motor fire engine."

I wonder if they stopped to pick up passengers on the way to the fire - it conjures up pictures of the old Will Hay film Go to Blazes. Rolling Eyes
